ok, first off i have:

Toshiba laptop
- Amd turion 64 x2 tl-60 @ 2.00 ghz
- 2g ram
- windows vista 32bit home premium

cliffs at bottom

The problem is that i let my sister borrow my computer and when it was returned i saw she had been on myspace...no biggie...until i opened my internet explorer icon - "the shortcut cannot be found, would you like to delete this shortcut?" wtf? so i go manually into the program files and the iexplorer.exe file is nowhere to be found. For the love of god what the hell did my nutty sister and her obsession with myspace do to my brand new computer?1?!

no big deal, lets try system restore....nope....says my hard disk is corrupt somewhere and it needs to be fixed. no problem, lets run chkdsk utility....nothing, i get slight flash of what appears to be MS-dos prompt, i try it again but nothing.

so basically, my internet explorer program some how got deleted and i have corrupt portion of my harddrive but the chkdsk utility keeps crashing so i cant fix it. system restore also does not work.

thank you so much for the help this is driving me crazy.

Do you have the OS disk? Run a repair installation of the OS as a last resort.

But before that, have a friend burn you a copy of I.E. 7 on a disk and install it. Then see if that restores your connectivity. If it does, go to windows update and download the latest patches. Also ensure that you have a good antivirus and antispyware program installed. If you do run a scan.

A good free antivirus program is Avast 4 Home edition. Try it and tell it to run a boot sector scan on next startup. Do all these things before attempting to do a OS repair.

well im using mozilla firefox right now and the internet is running fine. its just i have bad hard drive sectors and every once in awhile ill try to access a file and it will tell me to run "dskchk" but then when i do it crashes. i have kaspersky anti virus and i scanned the computer twice and it didnt pick anything up. ill back up my hard drive on a portable and then try running the os repair. thanks!

boot up with a windows disc, go to recovery console and run chkdsk c: /r at the command prompt.

tell me what happens after that

If you have the shortcut on your desktop right click it ans select properties:
Target location should be: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"

Start in: %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%

There should be a button at the bottom of the properties window that says open file location, click that and it should go to the .exe's folder. see if its in there. If any of the above is not correct my version is Vista Ultimate 64 so not sure if the 32-bit's Program Files folder has the (x86) on it

You can PM me if you have any questions, i do tech support for a living although Vista is not something I am certified in.

If it were XP you could just go to the add/remove windows components and uncheck IE and then recheck it to reinstall it

NEVER loan out to family.

they will diddle you first before strangers will.

You can also try to create another admin account and see if it works in there, it could be corrupt in that profile.

Go to Control Panel>User Accounts>Manage Another Account>Create New Account>

You could make standard or admin it wouldn't really matter; it does sound like it could be an issue with your hard drive though

Try disabling your antivirus software first before running check disk.

Also, if you are running XP or Vista, you should be able to run check disk, by bringing up the command prompt....changing to C:, and simply type in chkdsk /f. The F is a switch for repair. You can also add the switch /r, which will recover data from bad sectors.

It's better to run checkdisk by booting up with a Windows bootdisk, before your OS loads. You can also do this in your drive's properties and have check disk run and fix errors during the next bootup, and checkdisk will then run prior to your OS loading. Doing this will ensure that you are not running Check Disk in read only mode.

Also, I wouldn't back up your entire hard drive, only important files that you need. If you copy bad system files back to your newly repaired OS, you are going to have problems. You can back up the entire drive...that's good, but only copy back what you need.

As an absolute last resort..... You might even want to format the drive if the OS repair doesn't work, and then do a fresh OS intall, copy your files back.

If you have bad sectors, and it's physically damaged...you are going to need a new hard drive. Formatting the drive and installing a fresh OS, will only eliminate bad sectors that are just corrupt, through the repeated reading and writing. If the disk is physically damaged, nothing will help it.

Here is some additional info on how to use the recovery console in Vista with your OS disk.

You sister by mistake put a virus on your PC. I say call Toshiba ans see if they provide you a solution. Otherwise, restore the OS.
