kitchen safety equipment...

Folks, I'm considering getting some fire safety equipment for the kitchen in my appartment (I've been present at about 5 different occasions in my life where fires have happened, not all serious though - 2 chimney fires, 2 kitchen fires and 1 house fire that got put out almost immediately). I will be getting a fire blanket but is an extinguisher overkill or also a good idea? Any firefighters on here who can advise me?

Get a couple class a,b,c, extinguishers, keep them handy, not in the back of a shelf somewhere that may be blocked by the fire, if you use a deep frier they have a class k for fighting those fires. The most important thing is to call 911 before or during the time you are fighting this fire, I have been on many fires where people have used up 4 or 5 extinguishers before calling for help, call and get us on the road we wont mind if it turns out that you knocked it by yourself.

some baking soda is handy - better than fogging out your apartment with a fire extinguisher and getting fined $550 ooops!

thanks for the advice folks. I'm very wary of kitchen fires since a restaurant I worked at had a deep frier explosion (luckily we were all having our staff lunch in the dining area at the time, before opening up, so none of the kitchen staff were injured) and it was SCARY how quickly the place caught fire... eek.... plus some students managed to set a frying pan on fire in front of me in one dorm, put it out with the fire blanket, still, fires scare the absolute living daylights outta me, and I know way too many people who have had fires (not injuring anyone though) in their homes, ack....

Anyway, thanks very much for the advice. Will get some extinguishers as soon as I get paid this month.

Sounds like you should order take out from now on, ha ha, but really, fire prevention is better than firefighting for civilians, also remember that the fire might not seem that bad, but the smoke is what is going to kill you before the fire actually does.

Don't forget smoke detectors. Alright I'm done acting like your father, be safe.
