I decided to try out the horror of being in a state of ketosis this last week. 1) to see if I could mann,age it and 2) to see if 1 week would shed any fat... the carb up was not important since I started eating normally again today.
Started last Monday and ran through to midday on friday. In all I lost 2 1/2 lbs in weight on the scales (taken weight immediatly on waking).
Took 1500mg of ALA monday and tuesday to deplete me faster and hopefully get me into ketosis a lot faster.
Meals consisted of bacon, omlettes, mayonaise, peanut butter, donner kebab meat (lamb),peperammi,pig skins (or scratchins we call em),protein shakes,flax oil,peanut butter,nuts,chicken,mince beef,beef burgers,cheese.
Wasnt really counting fat and protein ratios but knew my fat was high and protein moderate around the 150grams mark. Eating about 6 meals a day (varying meals with those listed above).
I checked my keytones using ketostix on Tuesday morning and as expected was still negative. However, Tuesday nite showed trace keytones in my system. Was drinking 1.5 gallons of water so this may have bee pretty diluted... urine was clear througout (except just after multivit cus of the b vits).
From then on, up until this morning (saturday) I was seeing either moderate or high keytone readings on the stix. Damn did this feel good! At last I could see progress of my body trying to rid me of body fat! What a feeling, this was enough alone to excorcise any carb cravings I had.
I did feel very lethargic and found it quite hard to get going. Only did mon, wed, and fri 1 hour cardio sessions. No weights.
The ALA definatly did get me in faster I think. I may try again without using it and see. Also, the occaisonal diet coke/pepsi had no effect on my keytones. Ive heard it sometimes tricks the body into thinking it is about to recieve carbs but not with me!
The one thing I did notice about this no/low carb diet was now, diet coke tastes greate, wherease before the normal coke was the only one for me. So when I do treat myself, it will be diet from now on. Also gone down to 1 sugar in tea and coffee from 2! Even bland carbs tasted great. My oatmeal tasted awesome this morning
The one thing is, knowing you WILL get carbs at the weekend so you always have something to look forward to + it really does work! Infact I can even see a slight difference in the mirror after only one week.
Im off on hols to gran canaria in 4 hours so when I return ill be hitting an 8 week keto diet and then hitting some spanish generic var (hopefully) for an 8 week cycle with creatine.
OH, I also found it very hard to concerntrate while in ketosis. I think I read somewhere that the brain finds it hard to function efficiently using fat instead of carbs for energy... apparently with me that was correct.
