Ketogenic "Fat Fast" diet question.

I am a 22 yr old who is 6'2, 200lbs, 14-15% body fat with a 350+ lb bench. I decided to shed the fat for the summer so I am on day 4 of my "Fat Fast" ketogenic diet. I basically live off of 4 Isopure Carb free protein shakes and 12 tsps of flaxoil. I usually switch the sahkes with chicken, tuna or egg whites when i get cravings, but i haven't had any yet. total protein is about 200g, fat around 55g per gay. I drink a ton of water (2-3 gallons)a day, i think i counted 13 big glasses (16oz) of water in a 3 hour period at worktoday. I am also taking MD6 twice a day (2 caps each time) as well as Androsol twice a day, bout 60-70 sprays total each day. I take 1-2 servings of sugar free metamucil each day. Day 1-3 pretty much sucked. I was extremely tired and Lightheaded all the time. The night of day 3 and all during the day of day 4 i felt fine and had a lot of energy, like i did before i went on the diet. Now it is late night on day 4 and i am feeling a little light headed. I took a piss test to see if i was in keto on day 4 during the day and it showed up negative and then i took one again like 4 hrs later and it showed up trace. I plan on doing this diet for approx 4 weeks with no scheduled refeeds. My questions are.. 1) Is the aspartame in the metmucil throwing me out of ketosis?? 2) how about the glutamine in the shakes?? can they throw me out? 3) is my diet good enough?? should i bump up the fat?? 4) do i seriousely need refeeds?? 5) is it just the fact that i drink so much water that i flush my ketones out so well that they are not showing up?? 6) is there anything else you would suggest i do on this diet or what i should tweak. I lost 10 lbs already and notice a huge change in my obliques and abs.

The protein could be throwing you out of ketosis due to not eating enough fat. When you're in ketosis and don't eat enough dietary fat your body will readily convert protein into glucose(it does this anyways, but more so in your case). The main way to prevent this is to eat enough dietary fat to compensate. Also your calories work out to 1295 which is insanely low for a 200 pound male. 10x bodyweight is usually considered the bottom limit for dieting which would be 2000 calories for you. You're over 700 calories below that. I don't care what any moron on this board tells you this is a horrible diet unless you're on some sort of anabolic assistance. Your caloric intake if less than half of your maintenance intake... Think about that a minute.

At any rate if you continue this diet for 4 weeks you are going to lose a lot of your strength and some of your hard earned muscle mass. If this is acceptable to you then by all means continue. Also be prepared for a little thing called rebound when you finish the diet. Your metabolism will be beyond sluggish at the end of 4 weeks and when you go back to eating what you think is maintenance calories you are going to put some fat back on that you just lost.

If you want to believe all that T-Mag preaches that's fine, but at least follow John Berardi's nutrition articles. He is the only diet guru on that site that has anything good to say in my book. I'm not so much ripping on you as much as I am anyone who responded to your previous thread about the dieting being a good idea. It's not.

As far as your other questions I never had any trouble reaching and maintaining ketosis while drinking diet soda's and foods containing artificial sweeteners. It's most likely the lack of fat in your diet that's the problem. I get more fat in my diet than you're getting and mine only makes up 15% of total calories. And you're on a "ketogenic diet" which means you're supposed to be eating fat. You simply can't attempt a ketogenic diet without enough fat intake, it doesn't work like that. Eating fat is the key to the diet, not an option.

If you want to do an extreme diet that isn't quite so bad then I'd suggest upping your fat enough to bring your calories to at least 9x bodyweight while keeping protein the same. Do this for 4 weeks and your fat loss will still be significant. Without refeeds I wouldn't expect much in the gym. Once your glycogen is depleted it won't fill itself until you eat some carbs so your workouts will suck. I'd suggest at least a half day carb-up after your final workout of the week. Perhaps a few hundred carbs just to provide enough glycogen for next week's workout.

Also next time you decide to shed fat for the summer you shouldn't wait till summer starts. You should have started during the spring so that when summer rolls around, as it already has, you'll be where you want to be. Now you have to spend the first month of summer needlessly suffering on a extremely low calorie diet. What kind of fun is that?

you can cut out all those extra supplements if you take ALA 3000mg/day with meals.

And yes aspartame can slow down your weight loss. Same with meltadextrin or whatever it's called. And caffeine. So diet cokes are out of the picture as well.

if you do cardio FTITM on this diet (on empty stomach) is your first meal still a protein and flax mix?

this is burning_inside's friend who wanted him to post this msg. I gave up on the fat fast diet it's not gonna work for me. I am gonna do a CKD diet instead. I have too much good, hard earned muscle mass i don't want to lose.

On the same diet now, can’t go to the gym because I am anemic and the MD’s don’t know why,

Anyway have been slowly getting my carbs down and my fat intake up, have also tried to eliminate the caffeine and aspartame, it is hard,

First week thought I was going to past out and just wanted to sleep, much of this was due to the anemia but also keeping my carbs below 20g per day, which is nearly impossible,

Have been enjoying good meals, e.g. steak/lobster/butter and ½ cup broccoli.

I know My strength is down and I have lost some muscle, but have lost much more fat than anything else and of course water.

I am going to stay on this diet until the anemia is corrected then will hit the gym with a vengeance,

Do you think I should be adding ala to my current diet?

Yo, I've seen some of your posts and you make good posts.

I don't see why you need ALA other than to get into ketosis. Once you are in ketosis any and all carbs below a threshold will be sucked up by your brain and your muscles. If you are not in ketosis ALA will help, but I imagine you are in ketosis at this point. ALA should be used when you finish the diet because you will have temporary insulin resistance, which should go away very soon but also necessitates a glucose disposal agent.
