Kerry made it an issue from day one. That isn't a partisan assessment. He was preempting the liberal weak on security attacks he knew would come along with an examoination of his record. Because he mae it such an issue, something every republican for obvious reasons would have hoped to avoid, they were forced to dreg up the post war bullshit. That was a bandaid. There isnt much poor to say about his actual war record, he knows it, which is why he mentions it and his "band of brothers" at every campaign stop.

I could personally give a shit what Bush did at that time but if someone is going to dog John Kerry's service to his country, I'll contrast the 2 and call them on it every time.

The "dirty little secret" on Bush's guard service is actually a dirty little secret about the Guard in general.

Bush's attendance at drill was normal: most people in the Guard miss a lot of drills. Drill attendance is often quite low. Bush was right in line with typical national guard behavior.

No one will say this because it embarrasses millions, and because the guard is figuring so prominently in the Iraq situation. But most of the Guard is a bunch of shitbags, and Bush just went along for the ride.

Talk about a non-issue.

Kerry's Vietnam service was honorable. His frustrations post war are undrstandable. Neither of these give him any additonal credibility of expertise in the realm of national defense and strategic policymaking; that is what a cabinet is for. The Prez makes the decisions once all info has been presented; it is not as if the prez is in the late night meetings hammering out details. Functionaries do that.

I have always thought that was wrong for demos to punish people for working hard and being sucessful. Their mentality breeds mediocracy(sp).
