Jeet Kune Do - The art of fighting?

Aeoleon

Banned
I am interested in beginning a form of martial arts which will give me the best advantage in hand to hand combat. I don't just want to learn how to defend myself, but also incapacitate an adversary if necessary (Not kill).

Does anybody have any opinions about the worthiness of Jeet Kune Do?

if you dont wanna really hurt soemone then dont choose jkd, and its not the art of fighting its Way of intercepting the fist

intercepting it? how? like catching it?
I have the tao of jeet kune do, and 'its Way of intercepting the fist' doesn't seem like an entirely correct summary.

Jeet Kune Do is only a name. He knew it would falsely put limits on it. Interceptions are usually destructions- an attempt to hurt the attacker before you counter attack him. This HELPS to tone down the attack. The normal 175-200 lb man cannot outbox a 300 pounder in most situations-that's why there are weight classes. The destruction ATTEMPTS to bring that person down. An interception can also be a simple shuffle snap kick to the groin- use your longest weapon(leg) against the attackers shortest (usually the punch to the face). Most JKD schools use Muay Thai & Brazilian jiu Jitsu with added street flare. Most people don't know this and assume it's an art similar to kung fu or Tae kwon do. The person who inherited JKD (Dan Inosanto) http://www.inosantoacademy.com
Is an instructor in BJJ, Muay Thai, Savate, Kali, Karate, Wing Chun-the list goes on and on. There are several UFC fighters that train with him and at his gym. It's unfortunate that people think JKD as weak. It's the kung fu nerds who hand on Bruce Lee's name who give JKD a bad name. Inosanto has done more for JKD than Lee ever did.

I think in original JKD they used a lot of trapping and limb destructions, so in essence they did 'intercept the fist'. JKD now seems like an amorphous umbrella term like Vale Tudo or NHB to describe a combat system that addresses all ranges of fighting.

Jkd is NOT for beginners.

You would get much more out of it if you did wing chun for a year or too along with a competitive fighting art such as kick boxing (chinese kick boxing not the highly restricted western kick boxing)

then start jkd

as I recall bruce "basicly" said JKD was the formless art, no restrictions. you learn what works for you, taking from many styles and use what suits you as one person. I'm no expert but you would need to learn alot of different styles and find what fits to you alone. I think the actual task of learning JKD falls on the person. no one can really teach you what is suitable for you. thats up to you. just as Dan Inosanto did.

But Inosanto and other Jkd insrtructors can teach you HOW to blend styles for yourself.
There is a certain methodology to making a move from Kali fit with a thai shot.
Bruce and Danny created the infrastructure now various students add to it and build upon it.

Lee worked hard to find -- and eventually to create -- the "best" style he could.

He also recognized that no system was foolproof. There's an anecdote that Mr. HeavyDuty should remember -- a kid asked Lee "What do you do if someone sneaks up and throws a wire garotte over your head?" He shrugged and said "I die."

You say you have the book -- look at the example (that's a good word -- it's not the law, not the only way, but just an example) of counterattacking inside the other guy's punch rather than blocking and THEN counter-punching. That's the essence of the "Interception." Logically, a two-step defense/counterattack must take more time than a one-step interception.

One might be tempted to speculate that one might miss the block and be unable to counterattack at all; or the delayed counterattack would be less effective than the instant interception... but if interception makes sense to you, you probably don't need to spend that much mental energy justifying it.

(Hey, danabolic -- you clearly have a special meaning for that word "destruction" but I'm not familiar with it. A little more info would be welcome.)

Agreed, as you take from different styles, you should take from different teachers

AHHHHhhhhhh. Destructions. Fight stoppers by any description.

Danabolic?? Would you consider a thai shot to the leg a destruction?? I have seen limbs "destroyed" by it-meaning made totally useless. but by brute trauma, not necessaryily just muscle or nerve damage such as occurs in a bicep gunta or pec/delt tie-in smash.

I think a thai shot should count as a destruction. lol

Ill

Actually Interceptions or Blocks are not the same thing as "destructions". The two are totally seperate. The choice to use a block or to "Destroy" an attacker's weapons (arms or legs etc) is a decision that is made on the spot and based on the level of the threat. This decision is not a consious decision but happens in an instant in reaction to the threat. The mark of a true master is not to "Destroy" but to end the conflict.

"There's an anecdote that Mr. HeavyDuty should remember -- a kid asked Lee "What do you do if someone sneaks up and throws a wire garotte over your head?" He shrugged and said "I die." your quote digger.

Hahahaha, Are you getting senile old man? I never said that any art is foolproof. I know that it is probably hard to retain information in your last few years here on this earth, but I have only stated that for pure self defense purposes that BJJ is king of the hill in my opinion. By no means is it foolproof though, a solid shot in the nose has brought down those who know a lot more than just BJJ or any other art for that matter. Please let me go from your life digger, there are better things to do in your old age than talk about me in threads.

Bam, your struggling again bro. You are arguing with a man (Danabolic) who is a certified instructor in JKD, as well as muay thai, and has taught the art for several years. He has STUDIED his craft and knows the ins and out of JKD very well, not that you do not have knowledge of the art, but he has studied the art extensively under one of Lee's actual students, as well as Insosanto. I think that gives him some serious credibility when it comes to talking about JKD. What are your qualifications? Walking on hot coals and chi monsters do not count.

If I destroy an incoming puch, I've intercepted his/ her attack. The puch was intended to hit me- but, I've in essence used his offense as my defense. Just as if I passed a football (an attack against the defense) and that attack was interupted by the cornerback who intercepts the ball and in turn uses their defense to attack. If all one practices is interceptions, their defense probably won't be a thought to ponder- it will be instinct. There are other methods of interception- but I would consider the destruction to be the highest form of interception because not only does it stop the attack but it should also cause the attacker damage as well. I'm not flaming you- really- but I myself after 24 years of martial arts and still learning, would have a hard time deciding on the level of threat- I would just react how I knew how.
If I pull off the Destruction, I'm willing to bet I'd end the conflict. And, to Quote Chai Sirsute: " I believe the true master is the one left standing after the fight."
Mr.HeavyDuty is right: I have studied under 1st , 2nd, and certified by 3rd teir lineage under Bruce Lee. Including Inosanto, and those are the interceptions they teach among others. I hate using Lee's name, but this is a JKD thread.

And illusionofsize- I guess you're right- a good solid thai kick would be a destruction in a sense! lol

I think we said almost the same thing, It's just the order of the words on the page.

We both agree that there is not really a thought as to what tactic to use in an actual confrontation. The offense in a sense creates the defense. The defender "feels" or "presumes" the attack and then applies the necessary response. I think the only difference between what we each said is that I tend to lean to the Aikido pilosophy of not physically harming the attacker (If Possible). Of course this is not allways possible.

As for Mr. Heavyduty, I think he is hung up on mis-understanding the spiritual aspects of my training. Thats OK though, He will see some day.

Good Job as usual Digger!

I am not hung up on any aspect of your training. I think that if you get serenity through your training than great.

As for me seeing one day, truth be known, I have most likely been involved in martial arts longer than you and already understand the spiritual and physical benefits experienced from training. Never assume without properly assesing the situation properly bam.

Again I ask bam, what are your ranking and qualifications in your MA training?

As yuo accused me of mis-spelling in another thread, You have mis-spelled yourself. Assessing is with TWO esses not one!!

Look it up Fool!

That is the best you can do? Dude, do YOU know that YOU spelled YOU wrong? When correcting a person's speach at least know how to spell from the outset................FOOL!!! hahahaha!!!! Try not to spell three words wrong and make BASIC sentence errors when trying to bust on me incorrectly spelling one word. ("yuo", are you borderline retarded?)

Have you completed high school? Hell, even grade school judging by your posts!! Hmmmmm...."mis-spelled"? You may want to grab a dictionary for that great word spelling you just made up. That is one word, not a half a word - finished word. What a dumbass you are!!

Also, never start a sentence after a comma with a capital letter. Now I guess you look like the dumbass yet again.

Once again, it seems as though my legit questions can get no REAL response here among you mental midgets, so I will again wait for some actual intelligence to arise before I post again, or if you continue to make an ass out of yourself bam.

I understand why you can not list your rankings or qualifications (or spell), you are retarded. That is cool that you get to have play time on the computer. It is an accomplishment to be able to even sign on the computer for you. I suggest some hooked on phonics for you special ed. kids, good luck corky!!!

Speach. S-P-E-E-C-H
I don't know you, but quit being a mofo. Typos are common, deal with it, otherwise you'll have a real tough time.

Ha Ha,
I did it on purpose to get your silly reaction! ;)

I have come to the conclusion judging by your hostile attitude and your childish language that you are not fit to teach anyone anything and I feel sorry for any students you might have.

I posted my response to your request for my rank in another thread and I do not feel the need to repeat myself.

Once again, A weak comeback by an apparent weak minded person. Now we are playing internet games here, who is REALLY being childish here corky?

I am so sure you posted it that way to get my "silly reaction". You forget, I have read your previous posts. The knockout and ninjiutsu thread. Horrid.

My students are some of the best in the entire southeast and soon to be northeast, we always win and will continue to. Danabolic55 can attest to mine and my students GRAPPLING prowess. Do you always feel sorry for winners? WEAK!!

My hostile attitude, poor fellow. I do not take these discussions as seriously as you and others here do. If you can manage to get worked up over a discussion it shows what type of person you are. WEAK. I just stop by to get a rise out of you morons after practice every other night, and it works!!! Get a grip on yourself!!! Do not be angry with me because you got showed up by Danabolic55 on your JKD skills. You should work on your spiritual side a little more, you let too many little things, like this for instance, get to you. WEAK!!

You rank does not matter, green belt in hooked on phonics or whatever you may or may not have. You have already proven yourself to be an ASS, and your knowledge to be very limited if there is any at all. Sounds like you do not know half as much as you think you do shitter!!

Talk to you in a couple of days corky!!
