I've need some help with this math problem

It's from a take home test of a friends brother

It takes Joe 40 hours to fill up his pool using his hose and it takes Dan 60 hours to fill up the same size pool. How long would it take Joe to fill up his pool using both hoses?

Who said Joe could have Dan's hose?

joe's rate:

40 hours x joe's rate gal/hr = p gallons

joe's rate = p/40 gallons per hour (call it x)
where p = size of the pool in gallons

dan's rate = p/60 gallons per hour (call it y)

combined rate = x + y gal/hr

(x+y) gal/hour x Z hours = p gal
where Z = combined time to fill

(p/40 + p/60)Z = p

Z = p / (p/40 + p/60)

Z = p / (5p / 120)

Z = 24 hours

one last part of the equation i forgot ------

i don't see what is wrong with my solution

maybe i need to look at the best ass poll thread real quick to get into a zen state of mind

Chilidog, since the problem gave you no information regarding gallons in the pool you shouldn't even bother bringing gallons into your equation. I don't see what you meant by adding "40 gallons per hour" and "60 gallons per hour" to the equation.

i used gallons because that is a unit of volume that might typically be used to describe the capacity of a pool. we could use milliliters if you prefer.

joe's rate is:

the capacity of the pool, p (i used gallons as the unit)
------------------------------------------------------- gal/hr
40

we're not averaging the hose flow rates, they are added together as the hoses are both running simultaneously at different rates.

I prefer oilfield bbls. and also need hydrostatic pressure for every foot please.

Rsquared is grounded and will be unable to respond.

so what does pwned mean?

The verb to pwn (past tense: pwned, pwnd, pwn'd, pwnt, pooned) as used by the Internet gaming subculture, means to beat or dominate an opponent. While it probably originated as a typing error of the word own, it is now used intentionally by many members of the subculture. The term has become so ubiquitous in Internet circles that it is often used outside of gaming contexts; for example, "He just got pwned in that debate" or "The hunters pwned that bear."

assuming the vapor pressure of water is.........

so what does pwned mean?

Assuming the generally accepted 8.33 lb/gl. of water.

Read about pwned below. Although it has also been explained to me as coming from a chess as in pawned.
It is geek speak for "owning" someone, in a very clever spelling. LOL.

Joe says this sucks= call it FT (fuck this)
Dan says my hose is bigger= call it JAI (joe's an idiot)

FT+JAI=JRDH (joe recons dans hose)
JRDH + FT= DFNW (dan's fucked w/ no water)
DFNW+JRDH= JHN (joe's happy now)
JHN+DFNW= DWNCIHP (dan with no chicks in his pool)
DWNCIHP+ JHN= DSJ (dan shoots joe)

joe is dead because he combined two hoses...not good.

I thought water was 7lbs/gal? I know beer is 5 lbs/gal.

80 hours

err no 80 hours to fill both pools

20 hours for his pool

My goodness... PBR and mountain muscle sure know how to take a math problem and turn it into quite the pool party, ya know? Are you guys natural comedians?

You stalking me now? I thought I grounded you?

Or you prefer the spankings?

I work in BBLPM.

When you coming to Colorado to let me wreck your bike? er ride. Damnit!

yeah thats what usually happens....thx for the invite tho.
i'll bet CO is awesome this time of year.

Does the humour lie in the fact that I'm taking this problem so seriously? I can't help it; I'm still being "graded" every day and i'm not in the real world yet where you learn to put shit in perspective and find alternative ways to deal with the problem.

Yeah, I'm going to have to ask you to go ahead and see post #3.

Great.
I looked at it quickly in my head and subtracted the 20% instead of adding it

Colorado is awesome all year. I might have a bike by spring though. No way in hell would I ride another man's bike.

You would have a great time cruising the mountain roads.

I found 6 dollars in my sweatpants
and I'm going to combine that 6 with the 4 I found in my bronco
and buy 144ozs of lite beer

Same system of equations that Chilidog offered, just in an easier to read format. Had to take a screenshot of my text editor because vbulletin doesn't allow TEX formatting.

dV = Change in pool volume.

dt = Change in time.

I figure out most problems on the quick
typically an exact answer isn't necessary
you figure what you need to know fast w/o going to the calculator

who used a calculator?

if you need one to add partial fractions, then ummm.......yeah

also redguru -
can i have my stapler back?

I would have done it the same way that chillidog did it. This problem can be a little tricky because you assume it would be a two second answer but you do need to do a little math.

how far apart does Joe Live from Dan? And is there a kink in the hose?
