A week from this day, I will own a Mac. When I get home, I'm taking the two desktop PC's that I have...an HP Pavillion and a Gateway, formatting the drives, re-installing the crappy Windows OS' and giving them to two of my neices that are in college. I was gonna set them on fire and post pics, but that would be stupid.

I'm forced to run Windows on this laptop because it's work related. Windows operating systems will forever be erased from my personal life.

I am simply done with Mr. Bill Gates.

The Intel based boxes are still good just run linux or a BSD on them. If you are unfamiliar with Linux, try one of the bigger packages like RedHat or Mandrake. Even tho I'm more partial to the roll your own varieties of Slackware or Debian. If you really want to see what makes an OS tick, try a Linux From Scratch install.

Why not learn linux? I'm not a fan of Macs and I'm glad that my school is getting away from their use. There were some programs that we had to use macs for and I hated it because I could only run those programs at school.

I used linux for a year because I was completely sick of win98 and I wasn't going to buy XP. I've been using XP for over a year now though, as it's easy as cake to get a copy now.

I know someone's going to jump on my ass for being a mac-lover but I got my first Mac three years ago. It had all the nice bits of Windows and the nice bits of Linux with all the hassle of each taken away.

The learning curve was very small but it might have grown over the past three years. VirtualPC covers a lot of the need for Windows programs but if you play games on Windows there's no escape in the Mac. Get a PS2/3/XBox and never look back.

I envy your delivery of the new machine. Until you've received and unpacked an Apple product you won't know what I'm talking about. It's a joy.

Did I mention that there are no currently-known viruses?

I run XP Media Edition at home...don't really like that too much either. As for the Linux, I'm gonna test that out on the box I'm on now (laptop).

RED: I've read some of Blut Wump and Gjohnsons posts on BSD, and will try them out as well.

I'll post pics of the unveiling for your enjoyment. I remember the packaging when I got my iPod.

Anyone who wants to learn more about a modern OS should have a fiddle with Linux. It's great right to the point where you want to change something and then the fun begins. I guess I'm more inclined to change things than most users, though. It's easy to use and get online from first install.

I think the last straw for me was when I wanted to install a DVD-playing client and had to follow the paper-trail of dev packages to compile and install libs. Broken rpms and versioning compatibility took me three evenings. It was seriously satisfying to be watching the DVD after all that effort but with a mac I just put the disc in.

There's no arguing with the price of a free download, though, and just about anything you'd want to know is just a Google away.

I wouldn't run it on a laptop if I were you. Some of the hardware in laptops isn't supported by certain linux distros. Try it on one of your PCs. My AMD950 ran linux quite well. I used Mandrake and the only reason I didn't try other distros is because my gf got used to it and she doesn't handle change on the computers well at all. About a month after I put XP on the computer, she said she missed Mandrake. Now she's so used to XP that if I put a linux distro back on, she'd complain.
