I've been laid-off after 4 years

Was told this afternoon by my boss.. Company not going to hit the estimates this quarter or next so more layoffs coming and I'm in this batch (up to this point I've survived 6 layoffs)...

Really pissed right now...

I support my wife and 2 kids and a big mortgage with my salary and it is not going to be easy for me to find a new job. I work at a software/technology company as a product development/marketing executive.

Lived thru the dot com rise, IPO fever, bust, bankruptcy, acqusitions, and now my number hits.. it sucks... 6 days after my birthday too

So VERY VERY sorry brother. Welcome to my world. I make a great 6 figure living selling software, but I have been laid off 4 times in two years. Thank goodness I have been lucky enough to find something else within weeks.

On a VERY positive note, every time I have been laid off, I have ALWAYS got a better job with more money. Hang tough brother, things will look up fast.

BTW - Let me look into a few things for you out there. I know a few high level software sales and marketing guys in MD and I will see what I can do. Its tough no though, this is NOT an IT market anymore, and thats why I am getting out as quick as I can.

Dude!!! I feel for you!!! My internship ended in May and I have had a major problem finding work in my field within the metro area. Right now, I am graduate student finishing up my graduate program. After it is over, I am shipping out of here!! I wish you luck!

i'm sorry to hear about that bro. Sucks big time. Seems like everyone is loosing their jobs today. I know the feeling. I have been stuck working in between jobs for what seems like an eternity. People always say things will look up. Sometimes I feel like beating the fuck out of the people that say that. But in a way maybe they are right. Good luck with your job search and I hope you find something real soon. In fact I saw on the local news today a guy with an M.B.A. who was a systems analyst standing on a street corner advertising his services and trying to make contacts. Fucked up.

Sorry to hear about that CK. The economy is tough right now but I hope you find something soon. Good luck!

sorry to hear that! I lucked out and only went through it briefly - and I know many others in the boat now.

I hope you get something fast, and I hope they give you good severance.

Sorry to hear about that. If it's any consolation (?) my hubby has been laid off 3 times in the past 4 years and he's a mechanical/design engineer. It's the sign of the times. That's why he went contracting. You might want to go that route, especially because you can work temporarily (contract) or as a direct hire. I will PM you more info.

Best wishes to you and your family!

Thanks everyone for the kind words and support..

Kronk - Thanks man! i appreciate you checking it out.

grlpwrd - Thanks for the PM.. good info I will use

louden_swain - I live in the Baltimore, Mayrland area.

The company is tanking again.. it just emerged from bankruptcy six months ago and had a too rosey biz plan for rev growth that hasn't materialized.. I'm one of 80 folk getting hit (we are at 500) was at 1300 people at our high in 2000.

Severance is ok i guess. six month paid with full benefits. Not too shabby. But the next six months are bad time to job hop - thanksgiving, christmas, etc.

I left the .COM world in 99, I saw $15 IPO go to $97, and then down to $2 After 4 years though thats pretty sucky, sorry to hear your getting stiffed...

:(

good luck hunting

That sucks man, good luck with finding a job, but at least it wasn't after 26 years or so like my dad. Keep pressing on, you'll find a job.

Little early to panic CK. I was able to find something within a month and a half or so after leaving Worldcom, as have all the IT folks I worked with. The economy and job market are improving slowly but surely. You no lose faith.

Don't sweat it..you still have a job. Your f/t job now is finding ANOTHER job:

1) get a good organizer, spreadsheet to list all contacts, hr #'s, headhunters, referells, status of jobs you applied for, interview times, etc. etc. Be organized.

2) Get a faxmodem into your computer

3) Get a SHARP, ATTRACTIVE, to the POINT (bullet form) resume, 2-3 pages, big fonts, easy to read.

4) Go through web sites, company sites, contracting sites, local headhunters, yellow pages, newspapers, fellow friends, newslinx.com headlines on what companies are doing well, cold calling ceo's, managers you see listed in articles, etc. etc.

5) Sell off any extra crap lying around the house on ebay, drum up a few thousand there to give u more time.

6) Get a good answering machine with professional message.

7) Practice your interview ability. Dress business casual, darker colors are more pleasant and relaxing. Be to the point, friendly, very interested in the company, not be nervous, etc. etc.

8) Look into additional incomes, opportunies while you have free time during the day. Start a club night at a local club, be a promoter, make some extra cash with getting people to come. Be a driver for auto shops needing parts from junkyards, deal in trading golds, jewels, etc. Import something cool from other countries and sell to distributors. Find a good product, buy booth time a local swap meet and sell there to the public. Sell paintnigs. Start a good e-commerce website selling your services or a product. Brainstorm, etc. etc. etc.

9) Read entrpeneur magazines, tech magazines, keep yourself busy and motivated.

10) Don't get burned out. Take a friday off, and go on a little vacation, enjoy the time off. Hell we'll ALL be working for the rest of our lives, so enjoy these times to see the world a bit and clear your head.

and yes the IT industry is saturated and very much in shambles. But you can still strike gold in a position.

good luck!

that might be the most informative post ive ever read.

If shit gets too tight, and you got some construction knowledge, or at least some common sense and a strong work ethic, I could maybe hook you up on some additions I have coming up.

:(

Best of luck CK. I hope you find something soon, don't get discouraged and listen to supernav, he seems to have some great ideas!

it may open up new doors... i was laid off after 8 years with my last company and i am sort of glad it happened to be honest.

Damn Ck...sorry to hear this. I hope things pickup pretty quick for you.

Sorry to hear that CK.

Have you thought of working for the gov't? You can't get fired (hardly). My job is so relaxing.

Otherwise SofaGeorge has it right. Hit monster.com hard. With your resume you should find another job in no time. Now would also be a great time to start your own business if you are so inclined (make sure it will fly in these economic times). For example I am planning on doing maintenance on peoples' cars on the side; people are buying less new cars which means they need to keep up their old ones that much more.

what happened to the time when you finished school, chose the best company who would have you and then work there till your 65 and get a golden pocket watch and a good pension from them huh?

Dude, continuing with that concept...if you were to partner up with a few other highly skilled mechanics...you could open up a shop and offer a SERVICE of COMPELTELY REBUILDING your car, new paint job, interior, engine rebuild, belts, tires, brakes, clutch, etc. etc. for a specific car for like $5000. Bringing it to SAME shape as a new car.

So say you specialize in Toyota Corollas. Then offer all Toyota owners that for $5,000 they can transform their car into a BRAND NEW toyota corolla, looking exactly the same as the day they bought it. With 1 year warranty. Either $18,000 for a new car, or $5000 to do the same to their older 200,000 mile car.

They did a report once, stating that MOST cars CAN be made brand new factory spec again for 25% of the cost of a new one.

You could do HUGE business, as long as you have a big warehouse you can stock every part of the car, have a contract for cheap painting, and you guys know EVERY part of the car inside and out.

I don't have enough friends, expertise, or most importantly patience for such an endeavor. The longest I can concentrate on a given task is a few hours. After that it becomes insufferably boring. So I am going to stick to routine maintenance like oil changes, tune-ups, etc.

What, you got a Toyota Corolla that needs sprucing up?

JC

well..... i may be chronically depressed and have no room to talk, but, i am GLAD the 20-60 retire with a pension jobs are no longer. I am GLAD all of the middle management and executives are now forced to slug-it-out with the working class.

I think that if someone is fired, and they cannot find another job making as much or more, then that is because they were overpaid to begin with.

People who are insecure about there jobs are so because they are not worth their paychecks. That, or they cannot handle missing a single paycheck while they are looking for a job. Shame on them for overspending, in that case.

Don't spend more than your worth and you will be fine in all cases.

work for yourself, or if your skill is such that you need others to build something of value (services, etc.) then band together with others and do it.
