it may not have seemed serious but it actually was. I know a lot of hard headed people who will discuss anything. I'm not sure they are all educated.

The "educated" ones tend to discuss the topic, not argue !

Guess that leave me out. Now what was the question?

there I re-worded it so it would be clear on my point.

lol im just wondering everyones thoughts on this,I agree with the educated ones discuss, and uneducated people argue and dismiss others opinions

I think the statement would be more accurate if "objective" were substituted for "educated". People who've been exposed to to a broader range of ideas might be more likely to consider new ones objectively, but it's not necessarily a prerequisite as the aphorism would imply.

not neccessarily. education does not assure objectivity, or sufficient sophistication to ensure rational, detatched discourse or critical analysis of a concept.

I remember in school where we would form an idea we felt strongly about. We would write a synopsis of the idea, maybe a page or so. The when we were done the Teacher would make uas switch with someone else of her choice and we had to argue their idea. Sometimez we were against it. But hey we were there to win, so you just do the best you can. You can sell it if you dont believe in it. When its done you can forget it.

i believe the too go hand in hand in most cases, however there are some people who arent very educated but very open, but at the time these words were spoken the world was run on very christian beliefs and god was the reason for everything, times have certainly changed now.

but im glad this thread got the action it did,and everyone chimed in with their opinions

yeah, it all depends on the person, not so much on the education. If that person is stuck in what he/she beleives you wont be able to get through to them eventhough you have hard evidence right in front od you. Those are the people that piss me off the most

In some instances yes, religion, politics..etc.

once the thought is recognized, it is entertained- it has been accepted into the mind. if it has a result- and is acted upon, it has been a choice.

I would agree. I would even go further and say that an educated mind will be able to understand the other side without agreeing with it.
