maybe get him involved in a staged death hunt, where psycho stalkers are searching all over the city or him, and he has to run away all the time so he can stay alive. make it absolutely real, though. the fear has to be REAL. you might have to hurt him a little.

Heh, sounds somewhat like me about 8 years ago. Luckily that is over.

he either has mental health problems or serious self defeating attitudes/behaviors. No idea which, but it sounds like it. People who don't wouldn't just let their lives end up like that. Has he been tested for things like Bipolar, schizophrenia, depression or things like that?

Ask your brother what his goals in life are, what he wants to accomplish in the long and short term. Then ask him to write them down and then to write down what he can do about them. Does he have any real goals in life or is he just coasting meaninglessly with no real plan? I would assume not.

Also, try to make him see himself the way other people see him. Videotape him, or something along those lines then show it to him.

I know the feeling. Thing of it is that my brother was the "good" child. Never stayed out too late, never disobeyed parents, never skipped school, etc. Kid was on the honor roll at school and every thing.Graduated vocational high school as Auto body machanic. Few years later......He is now a junkie who only calls when he needs drug money. Spent a good 2 years being unemployed, his former employer (parents friend) fired him for being high constantly and exposing his track marks at work......Now he finally has at least one foot on the ground, he has a new job that he goes to daily. Suposively is on treatment instead of drugs. However he is a huge dissapointment to the family.
It does SUCK big time.

My brother is worse because he has no vice to blame things on. No drugs, no alcohol, he is the way he is because of everything he has done to date with a CLEAR MIND. He cant sit there and say, if I werent addicted to drugs my life would be ok.

Actually it is a big deal. My parents are scoping out locations for retirement and will either have to drag him along because he cant function on his own or say fuck it and let his sorryass live under an overpass. I also spent a week earlier this year with a 30 year old diagnosed acute schizo and his family (childhood friend), so I think I know how much worse things could be. None of that means its ok for my bro to live the way he lives.
