Israel defys US pressure to stop settlement activity

"Israel should freeze settlement construction, dismantle unauthorised outposts, end the daily humiliation of the Palestinian people and not prejudice final negotiations with the placement of walls and fences," Mr Bush said last week in an unusually strong criticism of Israel.

But Ehud Olmert, deputy prime minister, told Army Radio on Wednesday: "The fact is they aren't putting any political pressure on us to do anything on the substantive issues of the political process."
