Is too much protein bad for you?

Hey whats up guy. I pretty much a newb to weight lifting and i have a couple of questions. I know everyone in the body building scene believes that you should consume 1-2 grams of protein per lb. So my question is.. Is all of this protein good on your body? Idk... it just seems that it would be extremly hard on your kidneys and liver. I have been consuming around 150 grams of protein a day, and i have to be be honest i feel incredibly sluggish, unlike i used too. Thanks for your time.

150g of protein aint much,
Your stats??

No it’s not bad for you, if the higher amount of protein triggers an over consumption of cals, then it will end up being stored as fat

Your protein intake should be at a level of one gram per pound of lean body mass. If you are experienced and your training is intense then you can increase this intake to 1.5 grams. Exceeding this level may put you at risk of increasing ketone levels within your body which will have to be excreted. This will further increase the chances of dehydration, calcium loss, and renal stress. You will need to have your BFP (body fat percentage) assessed to do this correctly.

Sorry i left out my weight. I weigh 160 pounds, and im not sure exactly what my BFP is... I will have to get that checked out. I try to drink around 64 ounces of water a day to help keep my system hydrated as well as calcium supplements (besides calcium from protein shakes). Anways thanks for the info guys.

Protein in fact does not leach calcium from bones as many folks say. It in fact helps build bone mass.....read on......

Health experts have long thought that diets high in protein could lead to bone damage. But a recent series of government-funded studies by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) suggests that bones aren't harmed by protein after all. In fact, research shows they can actually benefit from it, largely by aiding calcium absorption when the mineral is at low levels.

Though the results of this latest study have yet to be published, they add to a growing body of evidence that seem to contradict the theory that a protein-rich diet is harmful to bone health.

For example, last year scientists from the Bone Metabolism Laboratory at Tufts University reported that men and women who increased their dietary protein by an average of 58 grams a day had 25 percent higher levels of bone growth factor and lower levels of a marker of bone resorption compared with a control group.

And two years ago, another ARS study of postmenopausal women who were given a protein-rich diet of 10.5 ounces of meat daily (about 117 grams of protein, amounting to 20 percent of the day's calories) found no adverse effect on calcium rates or bone breakdown, even when they were receiving only half of their recommended calcium intake.

In order to better understand protein's benefit to bones, scientists are looking at the growth factor Igf-1, a hormone required for bone protection, whose levels increase when higher amounts of protein is fed to humans or animals.

In the meantime, there's no reason we can't start reaping the rewards of this research right now. I don't know about you, but if enjoying a nice juicy steak for dinner can also help protect my bones, I'm all for it.

too much of anything in life is bad. Know your body weight and = that with the protein you consume! Example. If you weigh 200lbs. then that's the amount of protein you should consume throughout the day along with excersise and plenty of water.

And how much would this "magic" too much protein number be...1 gr., 2 gr., 3gr., maybe 4 gr per lb. of bodyweight?

too much protein can be an issue but only if you have renal impairment you will know if you have renal impairment because you will be under a specialist for it.

however too much red it bad for you period not so much in the short run but there are some serious links to red meat and bowel cancer i can put up some papers if you want. so fish, chicken, turkey, cottage cheese, eggs all are fine keep the red meat under control though bro.

Do Regular High Protein Diets Have Potential Health Risks on Kidney Function in Athletes?

Jacques R. Poortmans; Olivier Dellalieux
Full Article Table of Contents for Vol. 10, Iss. 1

Abstract
Excess protein and amino acid intake have been recognized as hazardous potential implications for kidney function, leading to progressive impairment of this organ. It has been suggested in the literature, without clear evidence, that high protein intake by athletes has no harmful consequences on renal function. This study investigated body-builders (BB) and other well-trained athletes (OA) with high and medium protein intake, respectively, in order to shed light on this issue. The athletes underwent a 7-day nutrition record analysis as well as blood sample and urine collection to determine the potential renal consequences of a high protein intake. The data revealed that despite higher plasma concentration of uric acid and calcium, Group BB had renal clearances of creatinine, urea, and albumin that were within the normal range. The nitrogen balance for both groups became positive when daily protein intake exceeded 1.26 g · kg–1 but there were no correlations between protein intake and creatinine clearance, albumin excretion rate, and calcium excretion rate. To conclude, it appears that protein intake under 2.8 g· kg–1 does not impair renal function in well-trained athletes as indicated by the measures of renal function used in this study.

"Is too much protein bad for you?"

Yes, too much of anything is bad for you. Just stick to smaller more frequent meals that are slightly heavier on the lean meats. Protein shake PWO. Your body can only absorb so much protein in one sitting anyway, best to limit it to 40 - 60 grams a meal IMHO.

Well, there is a threshold amount of protein that could probably damage your body but good luck reaching it! Water can kill if consumed in large enough quantities but you really don't have to worry about it. Consuming two to three grams of protein per pound of LBM is not dangerous for healthy people. If you're suffering from renal failure then there are issues.

You are not drinking enough water. You should be drinking at least 1 gallon of water/ day if not alittle more. I will drink 1 1/2 -2 gallons of water daily. Everyday no exceptions. The more you can keep your system flushed out the better it will be for you, especially for the kidneys. I am currently taking in over 400 grams of protein/ day and feel GREAT. No problems at all. Believe me it's the water

Thank you guys for all the excellent info. Man and i thought i was going above and beyond drinking 64 ounces lol. I will be definetly drinking a lot more water as well as uping my protein intake to around 1.5 grams per pound.
