about once a week i make ground beef 90% lean with peppers....kind of like a chili. i always thought b/c it was 90% lean it was not that fatty. i just looked it up on fitday.com and 8oz of that is like 32g of fat??? is that right?? if it is i may need to make some adjustments on my diet haha.

Anyway, it does not matter...if you can fit the extra calories in your caloric limit, you will still be fine.

You just have to be sure you ignore anything that has a percentage on it and just calculate the percentages yourself based on macronutrient content or calories. x% fat could mean by volume, weight, calories, or something else. A company could sell a gallon of water with a stick of butter floating in it and call it 95% fat free using the same methodology as what's used on the ground beef numbers.

Another good example of this is milk. 2% milk actually has about a third of its calories coming from fat. And whole milk is only 4% fat, but half its calories are from fat.

Bottom line is that the only things you should believe on packaging are the nutrition facts and the ingredients. Stick with those and you'll be ok.
 
what about 85/15 ground turkey?? it's so much cheaper, so i have to believe it is worse... I normally cook it on the foreman, and I see that a lot of "fat" bleeds out... how bad is 85/15?
 
At Trader Joe's they have buffalo burger patties that are like 14g Fat with 42g Protein. I prefer the way they taste over extra lean turkey or beef.
