Been looking into getting this other computer in my house connected to the internet for awhile now. Have been looking into it and I think I found what I need at the most reasonable price for what I'll be using it for.

Found Linksys products at circuit city:

linksys 802.11b wireless broadband router with 4-port switch $59.99
http://www.circuitcity.com/detail.j...+Networking+and+Modems&AccPop=false&oid=37889

Linksys 802.11b wireless desktop adapter $49.99
http://www.circuitcity.com/detail.jsp?c=1&b=g&u=c&catoid=-10265&qp=0368136743672&oid=50031&m=0

I know a lot of you guys know much more about these types of things than I, so I figured I'd see your responses to this post.

It would cost me around $110 to do this which is not to bad, even for a broke bastard like myself.

Get 802.11g...much faster and the signal goes further.

I knew Dt would be helping me out on this one....My computer guru advice man. I'll check the reviews out on it and see the price difference from the b

Linksys WRT54G router and the pci 802.11g card...roughly $160-170 total.

Also make sure you don't have a 2.4 GHZ phone. They'll interfere with the G spectrum.

I just looked at the g products. Is the difference that great and would I really need the g and not the b.

I'd only be using this second computer for checking email and using AIM and looking on here.

The b is around $100 and the g is around $200

I'm broke and the $100 is more appealing, but if the connection sucks and isn't even worth the $100 than I'd understand. But than I'd have to hold off for awhile longer if I were to get the G

b is 11Mbps and g is 54Mbps, but if you're just using the internet your top speed is probably 1.5Mbs anyway.

I have a 11b setup from log ago... works great. Yeah I know there is faster.. but 99% of it's use is internet over my cable modem...

The internet is the bottleneck not my wireless....

I bumped up to an SMC Barricade with 802.11g when my Linksys got flaky (after several years of pretty good service, I might add); I don't see much difference in speed or range, certainly not $100 worth. It's nice that 11g is compatible with my old 11i cards, so it's not like you're locked in -- you could buy one nice bit of hardware and go cheap on the rest, and upgrade the cheap bits later. But that's also why I have a garage full of obsolete cheap hardware. :)

The Linksys would fall over or lock up if I tried to do a really big upload; haven't tried it with the Barricade yet. Unless you're in the habit of uploading entire Linux distribution CDs, don't worry about it.

I have a TON of symbol made 11b equipment and a bunch of 3com stuff....

3com's first stuff was all symbol's commerical line re-labeled.... did a bunch of wireless deployments at apartment complexes along time ago... then DSL took over so I got to remove and keep a shitload of equipment.
