Is Swimming good for cardio?

Hi guys, I have been doing a lot of swimming lately in place of my normal joggin/eliptical cardio sessions. I wanted to know if swimming is a real good way to lose fat, and is a better substitue than standard cardio, because I have never seen a non ripped swimmer. Also, because swimming involves a shit load of different muscles, I want to know if that is going to hinder my normal weight lifting sessions... ie)less strength and recovery time.

only if your body fat is low, When I use to go to the YMCA I couldnt count how many times i seen "outta shape" people in the pool. A year later those same people were still "outta shape". Its better than nothing but fat floats so there is really no resistance if your just floating. I say hit the sprints, jump rope, and maybe some hill climbing. Besides, You could drown!!!

Coulda been the 5 twinkies they were eating before and after their "workout"........:D

Back on topic, I have heard that swimming is right up there as some of the best form of cardio. That's just what I have heard. I personally hate swimming.

Its wonderful. No impact on the joints & ligaments and therefore can be performed everyday without the fear of knee surgery 20 years down the road (ahem.... jogging).

I'm doubtful because I don't think you can get your heartrate high enough.

If you are worried about knees/joints, etc, use a recumbant exercise bike.

Watch for rotator cup injuries

I swim 1 mile on one day each week. It helps with my recovery and with my endurance. A lot of people seem to develop rotator cup problems over time, however. Their problems may be connected with poor technique, though.
