Is SONY still considered one of the best names in consumer electronics?

Or, is it just over priced
what item/s specifically? it has been explained to me that toshiba and 2 other companies (which slip my mind) make all the parts for sony, panasonic, etc.

there are several large companies that make OEM parts for major electronic companies. my father worked for Sony for 30 years, and now he works for one of these Japanese based companies you're talking about.
the difference is obviously the engineering and not all companies purchase the same level/standard of OEM parts
It depends what division you're talking about but Sony has always been very high quality. I hold kind of a grudge against them personally because they dicked my dad over very badly even after he was a major executive at the company for 20+ years and basically made two different divisions of the company what they were today.

Sony is soooo huge - they are just bloated in everything they do. Too many people, too many forms, too much bureacracy, they really are tripping on themselves. I worked with Sony's TV engineering unit, and later for Sony as a contractor up in San Jose on their media technology - and seen Sony's Japanese-inspired management on US workers effect. Disaster.
It's no surprise Sony outsources almost anything complex to outside firms. Then slaps a Sony name on it. This is the only way they can have any kind of quality in thier products. Ever notice there's never any uniformity in any of Sony's products aside form the logo??!!

i'm waiting on the new xbr8 which should be out soon. the samsung a950 just came out and that's apparently pretty sweet and is most likely quite a bit cheaper than the xbr8 will be. i think high end sony's are considered the best lcds by a lot of or even most people despite their too-high price tag.
