Is My Transmission Dead?

Brothers and Sisters please help. While accelerating hard with my 5 speed 1989 Toyota Tercel from a stop, suddenly I lost 2nd gear. The car would not shift into 2nd gear, but would take 3rd gear. While driving, I could easily shift into 3rd, 4th, 5th, and reverse, but couldnt get the shifter to move into 1st or 2nd. The entire shifter felt as though it had moved up and to the right. While trying to drive the car home shortly thereafter, I lost the ability to shift into the rest of the gears. The shifer feels frozen in place, not loose at all. I still have the ability to roll the car as if it is stuck in neutral. Any ideas on what the problem is?

I think somethings wrong with your 2nd gear.

Your fucked. I had kind of the same thing happen to me. You should just get a new transmission. You'll get charged out the ass to get it fixed.

Rice on......

Just take off the bling-bling tail pipe flair, buy new decals and get a 1995 phat as civic.

I would send the car to automotive heaven, pull the plug on her. She burns oil, has torn seats, no fucking AC, but for some reason I just can't let go.

it could just be a broken shift fork or syncro, which is not that expensive to fix, take it to a tranny shop and alot of times they can tell u immediately what it is. Dont jump right into a new tranny :-p

May I suggest a bullet?:)

How can this board be so insensitive? A brother comes greiveing during a moment of weakness and the pirhannas or automotive darwinism come forth to inform me the car is outmoded, outdated. Whatever happened to loyalty? You moraless Philestines must lease.

Must lease cars. Like having a one night stand. You can't understand love that transcends the options that you milk the dealer for...

No leasing here. I drive them until they don't shift into gear.

Seriously though, have a good mechanic look at it for you. If you take it to somebody you don't know, they will milk you.

Milk Doesn't Do The Body Good

I thought that it might be a shif linkage or the synchros, but the mechanic told me I need a new tranny. The wily technician will just probably replace a cheap part and charge me for a junkyard reinstall. Should I ask for a copy of a purchase order to insure that he replaced the old transmission?

I think that would be a smart thing to do.

How much is your car worth?

In my experience, it wouldn't make much sense to install a new transmission, for a considerable cost, into a car that might not be worth the cost of the transmission. Example: If the car is worth $1500 and the cost of the transmission is say $2000(might be kind of high)....what have you gained? Say in six months you needed to sell the car....you couldn't get $3500 for it. It would probably still be worth $1500. Throwing good money at something bad comes to mind.
