Is Kerry's speech on Stem Cell research...

I don't see that changing regardless of how the election turns out....

You don't see it changing? I don't see the other option in this election banning research that could help people due to religious beliefs do you?

Oh, you meant the dumbass part. There are degrees ;)

BBF - This is exactly what I am talking about...

I agree the money could have been spent in a more productive way....

BUT stem cell research has many pitfalls still to be worked out that are well known and really unaffected by this issue (see article linke in post #24 above)... AND like I said - how many people total have alzheimers or another condition that is even appropriate for this?

not many...

tey have done a great job making this a real "heart-strings" issue when it is realitivly insignificant.

True, but spending the money on research, would have been more productive than on the war. All the war in Iraw has acomplished for is 1000 dead Americans, several thousand wounded, and has filled the ranks of OBL's terrorist army. A higher percentage of muslims hate us now than did before the war. All we have done is made the terrorist situation worse.

Instead we could have used that moneyto fund medical research. And I agree Alzheimers (which my grandfather has right now) and AIDS are bigger threads than Saddam was.

Granted stem cell research was not a cure all. Anyone with a biology background knows that, but it does have the potential to do a lot of good, and it should not have been banned.

yeah I meant the dumbass part.... LOL

what WILL be interesting is what kind of choices we will have in 08 given either of the outcomes...

I can not have sex or have safe sex or one partner sex and not die from Aids.

I can't do anything about terrorists attacking us or whacko world leaders myself..
True, but try telling that to the millions of children who die each year in Africa, and around the world, who had nothing to do with being born HIV positive!

Kerry will allow private companies to do stem cell research, he will also give federal funds to companies that research it.

well this has gone in a direction that i didnt intend it to. lol, i didnt say, research or war. never once.

also. saying putting any conditions on how research can be conducted is stupid, like saying... "go out and win an olympic gold medal in soccer or we will torture and kill you"

if you want to say that stem cell research isnt the most promising research out there... fine. thats not the issue. the issue is funding in general.

i dont know about one scientific discovery that worked the first try, except for Polymerase Chain Reaction.

sweet then...

I am going to write up a proposal for a couple million that will prove stem cells mixed with grape jelly will cure paralyzation....

It is about as useful as some of the models people work with...

not putting some kind of controls on what gets funded and what doesn't is wasteful and takes money away from valid and purposeful proposals.

thinking that scientists police themselves and only propose valid and useful research is naive.

apparently you dont spend much time around Ph.D's all the time

actually I do and have - I have worked with excellent research institutions and bad ones as well... I have close friends that have their own labs in NIH, is that adequate exposure?

I have had the chance to to see first hand some of the crap research and invalid animal models people try to put out.... (when they are not sufficiently policed by their institituions/peers) I have also had the chance to see some great research that has real possibilities that is underfunded - because it is not a sexy/in vogue topic

I now work with pharma/biotech companies - a fair amount of those try to put together lots of crap ideas as well that will never go anywhere but sound good "in theory" millions in wasted funding for something that was fundamentally flawed... all the while the execs ride around in limos and throw expensive parties - while little to nothing of any clinical significance is ever accomplished...

I will say there are good and bad tho - some people have only the highest aspirations - while others just want to hit whatever hot topic guarantees easy and plentiful funding so they can stretch it out a few more years for tenure.

Again - it goes back to adequate policing by instititions/peers - the most prestigious institutions this is generally NOT a problem - now what about the other 95% of researchers?

You people do realize that stem cell research is still allowed, it just can't receive federal funding unless it limits itself to those cells outlined by the presdiential directive.

Private companies can and are doing stem cell research.

Moreover there are ethical issues with respect to purposely creating human life for the sole purpose of killing it and harvesting its cells. But don't let the obvious ethical dilemnas interfere with your political slug fest.
