is it possible to copy from a dvd onto a dvd-r?

i am wanting to copy dvd's (rented maybe, hmmm?) onto a blank dvd(dvd-r) is this possible? if so, how, or are the dvd's encoded to avoid this?

good question. is there even dvd bruning software out there? if so, does it preserve the dolby 5.1 and dts channels?

straight up copying, no... using a ripper program and then copying yes.
