Is it black and white, or is there grey area?

I just read this article in a magazine were there was a black and white racial debate on crime in America. Now, I feel that this is a human issue, not a racial one. I think crime comes down to poverty and environment and has nothing to do with skin color, but both sides disagreed. The white guy said that blacks make up 10% of the population in America and 90% of the population in its jails. He also stated the fact that blacks have a higher rate of criminal records. The black argued this by saying that blacks have to be violent because the battleing on an unfair playing ground. He also said that every black person should get 2000$ a month by the government to make up for the slavery in the past. What do you feel about all this?

Well it is a pretty tough issue but $2000 a month for slavery....Jesus Christ MOST of us who live here didn't own slaves and our parents didn't own slaves!!!!!!!!!! That's just friggin ludicrous $2000 a month!

First of all I am so tired of all these blacks who don't get jobs, who (willfully) get addicted to drugs, who have way to many kids, and kill each other. I think that if you don't like a situation, remove yourself from it! If you look around you and you're poor, then get a job, get a loan for an education. I know that you can't help what you are born into, but you can always do something to change it! I am outraged at this claim that we should pay $2000 per month......FOR WHAT?! so it can be added to the income that welfare, and foodstamps provide?

This bullshit needs to stop before something really big happens. Why can't everybody take care of themselves? Why must the successfull ALWAYS wipe the asses of those who choose to waste away? Well I'm sorry about peoples past, but again, do something about it! ( this sort of social problem really makes me angry)

Doesn't this argument stem from the payment Japanese Americans received for their treatment during the war. The difference is, that those people that were imprisoned were given the compensation. In this case the 5th generation family members would be paid. That is a SHITLOAD of many by the way. The US could only afford that for about 3 weeks.

Lastly, slavery was and is a REALLy shitty concept. What always gets glossed over is that dominant African tribes sold these slaves to the Europeans. In fact, if you look back long enough, I'm sure every human race has been fucked over by a different race. So from that standpoint, we should all get 2G a month. Including me!!!

Slavery was not unique to America. In many parts of the world it still goes on. Slavery was at the time a largely economic issue as much as a racial one.

There were a few blacks that owned slaves.

The slave trade is still alive today in some Muslim countries; to simplify things - they see nothing worng with it.

Slavery has had the racism angle thrown on to it, yet it was largely economic wherever it was practiced.
