IS general knowledge useless?Book smart vs. street smart

I know quite much about history, geography or any other trivia matters and I was wondering if those knowledge could give you a ledge or the upper hand in real life vs. someone who doesn't have a good general knowledge baggage but he/she is very good at what is he doing in terms of job and life in general.

What is your take on book smart vs. street smart?

In this day and age, you need an equal mixture of both.

Amen...Book smarts won't help you one Iota if you end up in the wrong neighborhood/situation.Those that are well versed in both will be the last men standing when things turn cataclysmic.

Yep.

Street smarts to survive. Book smarts to pull ahead of those who survive, and then dominate.

Knowledge of trivia, at the least, can always be useful for one thing: giving the impression of intelligence. Don't underestimate the value of that. :)

Sounds like you have well-rounded book smarts, not street smarts.

Not a knock, but someone needed to point it out.

He hasn't claimed any street smarts yet.

YES!!! Look what that impression of intelligence has done for Fonz!

just how book smart could one possibly be if he or she ends up in the wrong neighborhood/situation in the first place (let alone stick around long enough for trouble to start)? it's not like someone can't find out this shit before they start wandering around.

in any case, no matter what, someone is going to be uncomfortable when outside the environment they know. it's all just a matter of how well and fast they can adapt.

I may have misread the post.

Anyway, someone define what "street smarts" consist of. That's something I'd be interested to hear.

Only the strong will survive! Take from that what you will!

The ablity to survive and succeed in the most adverse situations and to achieve maximum results with all means available even thought those means are unscrupulous or unethical.

A "street smart" can outfox a "book smart" with his know- how and slyness as well as his real life experience that can be conducive in his quest to survive and succeed.

A key element of street smarts, and most any kind of smarts, is observation. Paying attention to your surroundings is usually a good thing. That, and understanding people.

I feel Street smarts are more Key to Day to day Survival, but Book smarts can enhance one's Street smarts by giving someone another angle which to think

Street smart to me basically means being able to adapt quickly to a given situation. In order to do that, intelligence and a quick mind is a given.......so i think the two are related.

Depends on the situation, but you're in for a world of hurt if you don't have some basic street smarts. I mean, no one's going to bash your head in if you can't find the indefinite integral of some polynomial. However, walk into a bar and look at someone the wrong way...different story.

"Book smart" helps you to make a living, whereas "street smart" help you to make a life!!

That sounds like something you read from a book :p

What are the book for if not to be read?

Actually there is a proverb that say, "Never mistake knowledge for wisdom. One helps you make a living; the other helps you make a life."

Street smarts will help start your grass-roots prostitution ring. Book smarts will help take the money you earn there, and multiply it by investing it in one or more markets.

how do we explain how people survive in war? lots of book smart people fight and survive in wars. lots of street smart people don't come home.

oh yeah, i forgot. this is ef and we tend to generalize around here and accept it as gospel. my bad.
