they're rated for immense musical and songwriting talent, and frankly they live up to every ounce of it. They're by no means a band that everyone should like, but their amazing record sales (#1 selling album 3 weeks running) has to say something about them, and the fact that they'll sell out 45,000 seat venues within 5 minutes. They aren't pretentious at all despite the fact that they're arguably the biggest band in the world right now, which i think speaks volumes about what they do and why they do it.

They're good for what they are. No one in the press has a huge hard on for them so I can't see how they're overrated. Their fans are reaching the obnoxious level of Slipknot, Tool, and Korn worshipers though.

well you'll have to look at this subjectively. If you dislike coldplay, theres nothing short of "ill get jessica simpson to give you head if you say you like Coldplay" that I could say in order for you to change your opinion. To those fans that purchase millions of britney spears' and linkin park albums, I hardly believe they see britney and linkin park as being overrated. I hate to state the obvious, but the fact that they're probably paying obscene amounts of money for concert tickets and merchandise indicates that the artists create something that speaks to them. However, comparing Coldplay fans to those of Britney Spears is pretty insulting, but I will agree that with mass worldwide appeal and a number of famous songs, the band tends to attract unfair attention from both critics and fans who wouldn't give a damn about them if they didn't have a video on MTV. And of course, people that dislike them simply because they think it's cool to do so.
