Iron injection

Assertive Guy

Just a begginer...

I'm asking this on behalf of a senior (as in much older) friend of mine. She currently is taking b12 injections, iron injections and has a weak immune system. The problem is with her iron injections. These are injected into her glutes daily and are causing allot of pain (she's not the type to complain about pain).

She cannot take iron in pill form - it makes her vomit. Is there another way, or a way to stop the pain? Should she be experiencing pain from this? Karma for any help.

Your friend must have anaemia resulting from a severe iron deficiency for her to resort to iron injections. Pain in and around the point of injection is a side effect so there isn't much you can do for that. Has she attempted to raise her haemoglobin levels through a high iron diet first prior to taking these injections? The only options she would have are:
  • high iron diet
  • oral iron tablets
  • iron injections
Her physician should also be looking at treating the cause of her anaemia by looking for things such as internal bleeding from ulcers or colon cancers, and menstral bleeding (if she still is). There are different types of anaemia so I am assuming that they have diagnosed her condition correctly.

She has altered her diet, but happens to hate liver so her husband mixes it with other stuff to help. I'll pass on the info re: result of internal bleeding, ulcers etc. Thats a great help. Thank you, karma.

Double-check to make sure that her anaemia is the result of a severe iron deficiency and not something else as that is important.

If it is iron, liver is an excellent source but it is not to everyones taste. Any meat, fish, or poultry source would equally be good as iron is better absorbed from meat sources than plant sources. Just make sure her cholesterol levels are not an issue as some meats high in iron also have high cholesterol levels. Vitamin C will also help with absorption as will any citrus fruits. Since you are in th UK, I will assume that she also drinks alot of tea. She should definitely cut down or elliminate this as anything containing tannin (ie: tea, coffee, cocoa) will affect the absorption of iron. She should also limit her fibre intake until the deficiency is corrected as high fibre can affect absorption rates of iron.

She can increase her iron diet through eating vegetables too, like beans and spinach.
This way, she can obtain more iron without the yucky liver. Also, meat, poultry and fish contain iron.

Hope that I helped you my friend.

Cheers,
Erik
