Interview Tomorrow

Hey i have an interview tomorrow for this Finance brokerage firm. It's my first real interview. What are the basics I should know and be prepared for when going on this. Im just out of college...Wht ype pof questions do they ask you that they ask on al interviews...Please help...Im Nervous...

Did you research the history of the company?

Do that! Throw out a few fact that may be relivant during conversations. That's a big plus in interviews.

(jerk off questions)

What can you do for us?
Where do you see yourself in five years?
What are you career goals?
etc....

Check out this site….the most important thing is for you to relax and be prepared. Know the company and what they do, what they are “known for” etc etc etc. Don’t EVER say anything bad about a previous job or employer (even if it was working at McDonalds) Put a positive spin on it, such as “Working at McDonalds was fun because I enjoyed the people I worked with and I enjoyed working with the public.” Not “That job sucked ass because I went home greasy every night.” See what I mean…..

Spend some quality time with that web site…there’s some great info in there…. Also, be polite, ask for business cards from everyone you meet so you can write thank you notes (DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP, write one for EVERY person you interview with)

GOOD LUCK!

Thanks alot folks...

I did alot o research on the company. First thing I did was go to the website. I know all their polices, training programs, products like the back of my hand. I also found a bunch of financial advisors online and havebeen talking to them learning all the ins and outs of the company and what to do to succeed. Its much different than the brokerage firm I work for and out of 10 people 6-7 have something positive to say about it (thats pretty good considering it is a brokerage firm) I also talked with a kid who went on an interview there already and I met the manager at a job fair two weeks ago...The rest is up to me I guess. Thanks for the help.

Also keep in mind that if your interview is anything like my first real interview, they aren't going to be asking you much about your qualifications in terms of what you learned in school. The basic assumption seems to be "anyone in that chair pretty much knows what he's doing, so what distinguishes him from the other applicants that would make me want to hire him instead?"

Speak confidently but respectfully.

Try to avoid stutters and "uhh" and "umm."

Don't be afraid to laugh at a joke or make a little one yourself.

And most importantly, remember that the reason they should hire you over anyone else is BECAUSE YOU ARE BETTER THAN ANYONE ELSE.... now you just have to show these guys why, which shouldn't be too hard if you really are better, right?

Good luck.

They asked my friend that a long time ago when he applied for a job at Toys 'R Us. He took too long to answer so he knew he was screwed anyway, so he just said: "uhh... it's toys 'r us..." and left.

make sure you work out a good response to the statement: "tell me a little about yourself" - I've been asked that one probably 50 times...

also, work out strategies for different interviewers - some places have you interview with 3 or 4 different people of differing status. put yourself in their shoes - for ex., a younger guy might be more receptive to someone good to work with, guy who's not an over-eager tool or who won't be a kissass that's going to cause him more work or show him up. an older guy/owner might be more interested in competence, maturity, and manner with clients. a "career" - type woman might be on the lookout for chauvinists or cocky-male types. and always try to get them talking about themselves and their "accomplishments" - its easier on you and puts them in a good mood.

I wouldn['t recommend scripting it, just to prepare for different types of interviewers and try to tell them what they want to hear....

good luck.

study behavioral questions.

ie--Tell me about a specific time when you had to meet a deadline.

Tell me about a specific time when you were part of a team and how you liked that role.

Tell me about a specific time when you had to deal with an angry customer and how did you handle it?

Tell me about a specific time when you failed at something and how did you recover.

these really throw folks for a loop when they have never heard of them before.

good luck and like Warik said---CONFIDENCE.:)

Awww Damn, I had one of these style Interviews and BOMBED it like a Cave full of Al Quada

Great Advice above. Be ready for anything these days.
Get a heads up on the Dress code and wear that to the Interview.

Over or Under Dressing is also a bad first Impression.
Whatever it is, look sharp. especially the shoes.

I recommend a dark suite--either charcoal or navy--not black

with conservative shirt (preferebly white or light grey)and tie.

make frequent eye contact.

Vic...everything already said is good advice, but I'm sure you already know that. Since you know all the basics, the only pointer I will give you is JUST RELAX. You will do fine, and remember if you are not selected it is probably their loss. Good luck.
