Seriously, though, I'm endlessly amused by how many lily-white people there are who just SWEAR that "my great-grandmother was....[drumroll for enduring cliches please]...FULL-BLOODED CHEROKEE!" I swear if I meet another person who's obviously as Indian as Barry Manilow claiming to have a Cherokee great-grandmother, I'm gonna bust out laughing. Can't speak the language, don't know the first thing about the history, have no ideas about the ongoing issues, and never did anything more than hang a dreamcatcher in their car or buy trinket art (because
"I really LUUUV the Indian culture!"), but doggone it, they're INDIAN!
Among recognized, culturally-active Indians, there's a joke (even among Cherokees) that "There was never such thing as the Cherokee tribe; it was just a bunch of great-grandmothers!"
Oh, but the story never ends there. They always add this: "We don't have any proof because (either) the courthouse with the records in it burned down, or my family refused to talk about for a long time, so I'm trying to get back into my roots. But if you see pictures of her, you can REALLY TELL!"
The point of all this, of course, is that interractial ancestry seems to be fine as long as its with a fashionable, mythologized romance culture like Native American. I haven't heard many of these same people claim "My great-grandmother was full-blooded Black...or Asian....or Hispanic..." No, it's the Dances with Wolves syndrome.
