Interesting fact about Shawn Ray...

AAP

Plat Hero
Platinum
His last pro win was in 1991. While I think he has the most complete and perfect body on stage, it has been 12 years since his last pro win.

12 years of long term juicing for what? More amazing is despite after 12 years, he is still a guranteed lock for the top 5 on any show he enters. The man is never out of shape.

And he doesn't have GH gut yet. Or any of those other AAS related illness that Flex, Nasser and Prince are falling to.

anyone got a list of his contest placements from 1991 to today?

the reason for never being no.1 is not the physique.....its politics....he has everything to be no.1....but will not be allowed to do so....

Shawn is smart... he keeps his number of shows VERY limited. He only wants to do one qualifier a year. He is also one of the few pros how stays in buff shape all year long.

Shawn is awesome, and even though he is short, I think he competes at 210ish..... he looks way better than 95% of the pros out there no doubt in my mind.

And props to him for never being out of shape

I'm sure hes looking at it more of a career and a way to make money, he knows with the politics he'll never win, which is a shame

Heh. This is on a board where people stay on all the time recreationally and never plan to compete. Maybe not on for 12 years, but you get the point.

My guess is that he knows he has a great body. He's satisfied. He loves the lifestyle. He likes showing what he has because he knows there are people who appreciate it even if he never wins. Maybe I just naively hold the old tenets of bodybuilding to a much too idealistic standard.

Yeah... but the point I was expressing is that as good as he is... he has not won a show since 1991. Come on... you know damn well he can scoop up wins in the NOC, Ironman, and those European shows.

more than 210ish.......anyways the guys and asshole and i hope he never wins again

He's doing it the right way. He may not be winning shows but he's making a great living and probably alot healthier than most other pros.

Hmm so maybe I'm wrong. He could just be a dumbass. I'd be interested to know why he doesn't compete in the other shows.

EF should start a new feature where questions are submitted to pro's and other important people involved in the sport. Like a mod posts a sticky announcing a tentative interview (by email or whatever) with the person, and EF members post the questions they would like to see answered. There would have to be a way to select the 5-10 best questions so it's not the same old "What do you recommend for a cycle" crap. So maybe use the karma balances on the replies to select the best questions. BTW this isn't my original idea; I've seen it done on a few other non-bb sites.

Sorry but Shawn does not stay in shape year round, I'll see if I can find the picture later and scan it if I have time, but I have seen him in the off season. His shirt was tucked in and he had a small gut, and alot of fat under his chin. Not trying to detract from his acomplishments, however I've seen the picture and know for a fact that he doesn't stay in shape.

Shawn Ray

No progress in his physique is something one hears a lot. If something's not broke, don't fix it. He has classic lines and symmetry that seperate him from many blocky GH sponges you see out there today. He may not have the size of say, Lee Priest on a small frame, but he has a very symmetrical physique that many pros, including Ronnie, should be envious of. I mean give some credit where it is due.

Agreed! Shawn may not be a mass monster, but his lines and symatry are second too none. Alought Dexter Jackson, and Newman (damn forgot his first name, just came out of retirement) are pretty close.

Dennis

That's it! Dennis Newman. Unbeliveable shape. Tiny waist and some of the best delts I've ever seen. The guy's delts and pec-delt tie-ins are just unbelievable.

I don't think its politics. Shawn's a good looking guy with a ton of personality. Why wouldn't they want him to win? The answer is his height. At around 5'6" there's no way you can be considered the "best in the world." Yeah, he's got great lines. But Dareem and Dexter are also pretty flawless in that regard and they're bigger and taller. Flex too. And another guy-- Melvin Anthony? I was at the NOC last year and thought he had the best body on stage -- sort of a bigger version of Serge Nubret with better calves. I can't see it getting any better than that. He didn't place.

Is it just me, or are the judges just not giving credit for great lines and symatry anymore? Come on, sure Ronnie is a freak, but he Jay Cutler, and some of the other top ranked pro's are by no means flawless. Ronnie has a gut. How can he be the top bodybuilder in the world? I'm not saying this is a hater, or out of jelously. Its just that bodybuilding is a sport of asethtics, and there is nothing aesthetic about having a 38" waist when in peak condition.
Nelson, I would love to see guys like Melvin and Dexter get a little higher rankings, even if they aren't the biggest guys on stage. Although it does look like Dexter has finally been given some credit by the judges.

I think as nelson that the ifbb does not want some sort of "nearly midget olympia".
There have never been a so small (overall) mr olympia.

The title holder represents the sport and it would be strange for outsiders of the sport to see that the supposed best bodybuilder is not that impressive in the real world.

I don't buy the politics angle for him not winning. He's got the longest running Weider contract in the business (12 years) so they obviously consider him an excellent ambassador for the sport. I think it just comes down to conditioning. He only competes in the best shows and he's outclassed. He could clearly rack up if he wanted to do secondary level shows but prize money has never been a big part of his income.

Shawn gets pretty fat and bloated in the off season, he is no exception to the rule there. I've seen pics on a few boards, someone once posted links right here on elite.

As for him staying the same, who cares! He is SMART. I'm sure you won't hear about him having kidney failure, or going into coma, or enlarged heart, etc, etc. If only Flex would have done the same thing, I don't think he'd be so bad off right now. He tried last year, but too little, too late.

My pick for the best out there right now, would have to be Melvin, Dexter, Victor Martinez, and Shawn. They all have small waists, although some of them are starting to get those gross obliques, but just barely. Ronnie and Jay don't impress me. They look like shit. Sorry, bodybuilding isn't just size, it's the overalll look. You can't have a friggen gut and be the best.

Roland Kickenger was another great who never placed. He retired to do tv and movies. He did the right thing. He was the closest thing you would get to a modern day Arnold Schwarzenegger. Perfect lines, incredible pecs and biceps, huge calves that weren't overpowered by ugly looking thighs that make it look like you would catch fire if you ran. Yet they overlooked him.

Judges need to stop the bs. It's out of hand. I refuse to give 'props' to Ronnie and those other beasts like Markus, for their 'hard work'. Yeah, ok. A lot of the other top pro's could do that 'hard work' and up the dosages, add more slin and gh, but they don't. So, they don't get the gut, and they don't win.

I hear people talk about how Frank Sepe and Roland wasted their potential, I think in about 10 years we will be counting them amoung the lucky ones.
