Intel CEO: "Things Need To Change in the U.S."

Intel's Paul Otellini predicts that the "next big thing" won't happen in the States unless government policies change.

Monday night Intel CEO Paul Otellini warned government officials that the U.S. will face a huge tech decline if government policies are not altered. In fact, the "next big thing" won't be invented here in the States, and jobs will be created outside our borders.

The warning was part of his observations about the Obama administration and the nation's economy during dinner at the Technology Policy Institute's Aspen Forum. He took aim at the U.S. legal environment, claiming that its become so hostile to business that there could be "an inevitable erosion and shift of wealth, much like we're seeing today in Europe--this is the bitter truth."

He went on to criticize the administration's Keynesian policy of economic stimulus and its inability to understand the concept of creating new jobs. "They're in a 'Do' loop right now trying to figure out what the answer is," Otellini told the audience.

"I can tell you definitively that it costs $1 billion more per factory for me to build, equip, and operate a semiconductor manufacturing facility in the United States," Otellini said. He also added that the majority of his costs were taxes and regulations not imposed in other countries. If the rates matched those with the rest of the world, outside corporations would have more of an incentive to invest in the U.S.

Former HP CEO and current Republican Senate candidate Carly Fiorina pointed out just a day prior that corporate tax rates are the second highest in the world. Fiorina also said that government policies are pushing jobs overseas rather than making U.S. companies more competitive against international rivals.

Bottom line, if politicians don't cut business taxes, people will not invest in the United States. "They'll invest elsewhere," Otellini said.

Intel CEO: Things Need to Change in the U.S.

Thanks a lot, Dems! Gotta love this change!

Intel is getting their heads beat in by their competition and for this CEO to blame the government is pathetic. AMD makes much better processors these days, the only reason intel still even exists is they have a monopoly in the industry, but that is changing.. thats why he is whining like a little bitch. he should quit so they can get a real CEO. the clown made 6.25M last year not counting stock, while his company continues to get trounced by the competition.

sick of people whining about the government when its their own damn fault.

anyone who builds a computer using an intel chip has to get their head examined. AMD is much much better hence why AMD stock continues to outperform.

Most people have no idea how bad it's going to get.

The jobs that were lost are gone.

Maybe dumbass should worry more about anti competitive charges and getting their asses kicked by competitors cuz they don't create overpriced products like intel creates nowadays.

but yeah he's rihgt, but he's wrong that "taxes" is the main problem. A tech company isn't giong to move to Puerto Rico just because it has lower taxes - ninja please.

It most certainly will.

Technical talent is a global commodity now.

Have fun starting up a software company to rival google or sri lanka. Good luck with that. Maybe Hollywood can start making their movies in Brazil and start casting Brazilian actors for Transformers 3 and the Avengers - hey cheaper taxes!

Taxes are just ONE of the factors - and can be overlooked if other thigns are needed and available. This loser just wants to scare the government. If the govt gets less corporate income - guess whose taxes rise....:)

True. Nobody would ever use an Indian company to write software.

Intel makes superior processors on the consumer level and workstation level, and for notebooks.

I push for a chinese company to make a lot of my parts at work...why? cause they have 40 engineers at my disposal at any given point, turn around time faster than any american company, half the price, technology is quicker to advance, not to mention they are the third largest at what they do.

Globalized economy, capitalism and the whole world on welfare. Embrace it or I will eat you alive.

Yes Chinese aren't being slaughtered by Japanese at Nanking anymore. Times have changed. It's not the 40's anymore - Americans now have to compete with foriegners -- so far they're not winning :)

They go there for the talent, low salaries, govt kickbacks and healthcare savings. They STILL pay US taxes on PROFIT they generate worldwide from the operations yo.

90% of our sales at GE's medical systems information technology group was software. Some quarters the only breakthroughs we had were in our tax technology.

And no, if a product made in India is sold to a company Europe, GE doesn't go rushing to uncle sam to pay taxes.

Am I misreading some of these posts, or am I really hearing some of you don't believe U.S. business is hemorrhaging jobs due to taxation and regulatory burden? Christ people, wake the hell up.

U.S. companies big enough to do so are moving to other countries like the biblical exodus. Ones that aren't are just closing their doors.

Try to look up a high end laptop with an intel processor. Find a comparble laptop with the exact same specs using an AMD processor. Compare the prices. AMD beats intel's price by like 30% everytime. In an economy which is the suck, when you can get the exact same computer at 30% less, multiply that by 100 computers a company and you get a shitload of revenue lost to AMD.

I think it is ridiculous that I pay 30% just in fedral taxes. Add in state, local, sales, energy, healthcare, etc and I make about 20 cents on the dollar. Corporations get it worse. He'll, I don't blame them for moving overseas. Not too mention why invest in a place where most of the profits go to taxes?

you may wanna be careful on posting publicly about an american company selling worldwide and trying to avoid us taxes :)

lol. he's talking about a multinational corporation..the largest in the world. i don't think they need to worry about anything. also, GE paid zero in taxes last year. they lost close to 7 billion in the U.S., as for their foreign profits, they are allowed to defer them indefinitely.

bingo. Which what makes that Intel CEO's comments pure b.s.

Ok, let me try figuring out this razorcookie logic:

1) No technical company would move overseas for tax purposes.

2) But GE (a technology company) has globally diversified and distributed profits (and losses) to reduce their US tax burden to zero.

3) Therefore (2) proves (1)

Maybe dollars and guitars work differently.

This. lol @ thinking large multinational corporations are getting raped by the US.

Obvious solution: close all tax loopholes and reduce the corporate tax rate to 15%. CBO did a study using those measures and showed that it would generate something like half a trillion dollars per year in revenue. And we would still have one of the lowest corporate tax rates in the western world.

But what about the Eastern world?
