I just installed a new 80Gb Maxtor HD on my computer. I run XP and the hardware was recognized by the OS but now how am I suppose to format the disk ? I can't see the new drive when I open "My COmputer"...

Boot into dos (make a windows 98 bootdisk from bootdisk.com), and run fdisk. Create a partition on the new hard drive, then format it using the 'format' command.

Ok I can use a Win 98 bootdisk in XP ?

Yes. The files on the bootdisk are loaded before the actual XP operating system if you boot up from the disk.

NO you don't have to do that. I had the same prob. Go into disk management in your admin tools. There it will show the disk. Format it from there and you'll be set

Better to stay native XP -- heck, you shouldn't even have to reboot for this. :D

Open up Control Panel. Pick "Administrative tools". Inside that is "Computer Management" and inside that is "Disk Management".

You can do it from Windows if you have PartitionMagic.

You can probably use the integrated Disk Management Extension also...

Right click on My Computer, - select Manage - Storage - Disk Management..
