Infected with a computer virus

Last night I got an email that said "dodge" in the subject field. Then it said "Could you look this over, I need you advice". Then I clicked on the attachment, and it looked like an ad for selling a car. I showed my friend, and he thought it was really weird.

We checked on www.mcafee.com and sure enough, I opened a virus.

This virus sends pictures from your hardrive and personal emails that you have recieved or sent to all the people on your email list.

Watch out for it!!!

I have scanned my computer about 10 times, but I'm still getting people emailing me saying "why did you send me this"

I don't know about the rest of you, but I have all sorts of personal stuff on my computer, that I don't want everyone looking at.

Any more info on this virus would be greatly appreciated!

they were injected with a poison

I haven't gotten a computer virus in ages.
if you turn on your extensions on file names (go to a folder, open it, tools, folder options (this is for win2k, other stuff will be similar), then in view, make sure that "hide file extensions" is off.

then you will see that jpg files are xxx.jpg and gif files are xxx.gif, and text files are xxx.txt and word files are xxx.doc

etc etc.

you will see that 90% of the viruses you get are either xxx.exe - which means it is an executable and if you run any executable that people send you, well... then you desrve a virus fucking your shit up.

and then there is a xxx.vbs file. that is vbscript. your computer will want to run that, and vbscript lets you do fun things like access the filesystem and registry.

so basically, look at what the extension is and if it has vbs or exe - be wary of it.
and sometimes it will look like "aaa.txt.vbs"
that isn't a txt file, that is a vbs file, if you double click on it, you will run it, and you will then have activated the virus.

have fun

No I currently don't have a fire wall. But I want to get one. And I know just a little about how viruses are sent. I do have virus software, but you have to update it all the time. I tell you what, its worth updating.

Just because you open a virus, dosn't mean you desearve it. Thats lame to say. Many people don't have a clue. But I'm going to be VERY careful from now on. Thank god its not a terrible virus.

I hope this helps people that may be infected with this virus, and to know what to avoid in the future.

Usually I would say that a firewall shouldn't be needed for most modem/windows users - but it can still prevent misuse from some things.

Check out ZoneAlarm (free)

Really, as long as you're not openly "sharing" information stored on your hard drive and keep updates on your virus scanner you should be fine.
