Important: Kidney Protector

With all the kick-ass liver protection available to us bro's
out there while "on" (Liver Tylex, ALA, etc)...have we forgotten about our kidneys? Granted, there is definitely a lessened stress to the kidneys when compared to the liver when "on" ....and...we do have 2 of them (we only need one)....but since there is a kidney stress involved when using AS and due to the fact that
bodybuilding is about optimal health:

Are there any good supplements to protect the kidney besides the normal responses I hear on this board "drink 1-2 gallons water day" !

Also, with the increased sodium intake (typically asociated with in a high meat diet)..this should be an extra concern.

And, with raised blood pressure levels also a concern with BB only begets another interest in this subject!!

Don't forget about Salt and Potassium balance too....

Read:

SUMMARY Kidney Parts and their functions :

1) afferent arteriole: vasodilates in autoregulation w/ low b.p. vasocostricts in autoreg. w/ high b.p. ; vasoconstricts from sympathetic stim.

2) glomerulus: filtration of water and dissolved substances out of the blood

3) efferent arteriole: vasoconstricts due to angiotensin II

4) Bowman's capsule: filtrate begins in capsular space

5) proximal convoluted tubule: reabsorbs 65% of water, all glucose and amino acids, Na+Cl- secretion of toxins, drugs, K+, H+, NH4+

6) descending limb of Henle's loop: reabsorption of water due to counter- current mechanisms

7) ascending limb of Henle's loop: reabsorption of Na+Cl- to produce hypertonic medulla

8) descending limb of vasa recta: picks up salt from hypertonic medulla

9) distal convoluted tubule: Na+ reabsorbed under control of aldosterone/ some secretion here

10) peritubular capillaries: reabsorption occurs into these capillaries which lead to venules and renal veins

11) collecting duct: facultative water reabsorption under control of ADH active transport of K+, H+, NH4+, HCO3-, Cl-

Uh....pretty important-ass shit!!!! What supplements would aid in the optimal function of the kidneys?

Hey fellas, I found a product from Metagenics.com "Renagen"

Here's how it looks:

Renagen is a unique formula designed to provide nutritional support for healthy kidney function and urination. It features select vitamins and minerals and raw kidney concentrate, along with stinging nettles, dandelion, and parsley - herbs traditionally used to support healthy urination.• The bovine kidney concentrate in this formula is guaranteed raw (processed below 37°C).

EACH TABLET SUPPLIES:
Vitamin A (as retinyl acetate) 5000 IU
Vitamin C (as ascorbic acid) 100 mg
Vitamin B6 (as pyridoxine hydrochloride) 10 mg
Magnesium (as magnesium citrate) 100 mg
Potassium (as potassium chloride) 99 mg
HERBS:
Stinging Nettle Leaf 5:1 Extract (Urtica dioica) 50 mg
Dandelion Root Taraxacum officinale) 50 mg
Parsley Leaf (Petroselinum crispum) 50 mg

Recommendations: 2 tablets daily.

I am not advocating the use of this product! I have never taken it personally but I know Metagenics to be a reputable/advanced research company !

Dr,

Cranberry extract seems to be an accepted method here. I have noticed that (for me) anyhting over 2 to 2.5 gal a day I start to feel really weird and get headaches. I think all the fine processes you mentioned become unbalanced. I don't know for sure, just what I think my body is trying to tell me. Feel weird with clear pee = to much. Dark pee = drink more. Nice vitamin yellow just right.

Yeah, I hear ya...It's the same for me!!! Cranberry seems to be more directed at cleansing the urinary tract than for kidney support although many bb's mistakenly think it's for kidneys??!!

Nature's Way Cranberry 100 tablets (vaccinium macrocarpon) delivers a highly concentrated juice extract that provides the health benefits of cranberry juice without the tart taste. Cranberry helps maintain a healthy urinary tract by inhibiting the adhesion of bacteria to the lining of the bladder. Cranberry has been a popular recommendation among health care professional for the promotion of urinary tract health.

Anther one:

Jarrow CranMax is a clinically proven form of cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) providing 500 mg of a comprehensive spectrum of cranberry actives in a natural, sustained delivery format. CranMax contains tannins, condensed proanthocyanidins unique to cranberries possessing an Anti-Adherence Factor that inhibits the adhesion of undesirable bacteria to the urinary tract.

Any other suggestions as I believe once we find the answer we're looking for here for our kidneys...it should become yet another staple a BB should adhere to when using gear!

The basic fact is that there is no substance that will protect your kidneys. The best method is to stay hydrated and make sure your blood pressure is within normal range. Cranberry extract is only good for protecting against infection and does not give you any added benefit beyond that. There are many things that are toxic to the kidneys in fact many of the substances they filter out will cause damage unless you are properly hydrated. Salt will not damage you kidney either but elevated sodium can cause an increase in your blood pressure, which will in turn cause damage.

Don’t waste your money on supplements, watch your blood pressure and drink lots of water. If you are concerned about your kidneys you can order some URI-strips to look for protein in you urine. Protein in your urine is a sign of damage and if caught early can save you a lot of grief years down the road. Remember once you damage them they do not repair themselves and the initial damage may start a slow process in which further damage occurs over the course of 10 years or more leading to kidney failure.

Good response bro...and well-taken BUT...I'm NOT convinced that in this world full of supplemental cures/fixes that NO ONE has unveiled a "healthy kidney supplement" yet. Besides synthetic drugs that essentially defeat the whole process anyway!!! dsyet!

I'm with you and your statements are words I live by "keeping hydrated" and all BUT there has to be something to aid the kidneys!!

I am not stating that I have poor kidney profiles or anything...I am just trying to be as "preventative" as possible--we all should be!

Excellent info ! Where can you order the URI-strips? Are they available at the pharmacy ?

Wish I knew about this years ago. Had a problem that was recently caught. One of my kidneys now only functions at about 25%. Wasn't lifestyle or steroid related problem. Was genetic and should have caused problems and been caught YEARS ago. Unfortunatly, my body always fought off all problems before any symptoms could be seen. Now I'm on antibiotics, drinks lots of water, and take cranberry extract every day. Also facing some surgery later this year or next to correct the problem so things won't get worse.

Trust me guys. You're never too young to take good care of your body from the inside. I'm only 31, and the doctor who will be performing my surgery told me that if it was any worse, or if I was a little older, he'd probably just remove it.

By the way, my other kidney is in perfect health. Got to see them both on a monitor when I had one of those nuclear scans done a few months ago. Not recommending it to anyone, but it was kinda neat.

There is an herb sold at B-A-C that is said to aid and protect the kidneys and also increase immune system. Forgot the name of it however, just check out the herbs you'll find it.

Juniper berry serves the same function as cranberry, only more effectively. There is no damage prevention, per se, but the addition of any oxalates should be accompanied by the intake of magnesium and potassium. Also, ALA can leach the trace elements from the body as it is a chelating agent, so be sure to take magnesium and B6,3 with it.

Glad to gear your going to be "ok" bro--:)

OK....I guess no one cares abot his/her kidneys! Oh well...have a happy life with your dialysis machines when you meatheads get older! :)

Also remember one of the main causes of kidney disease in health young adults is a strep infection which was not treated properly. Also try to limit your use of over the counter and prescription pain relievers that contain Acetaminophen, Naproxen Sodium, and Ibuprofen. Never mix these with alcohol or use them in combination as well.
