Implantable Chip: Where do you think this will go?

Insurers to test implantable microchip

By THERESA AGOVINO, AP Business Writer Fri Jul 14, 5:34 PM ET

NEW YORK - In a new test program, Horizon Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Jersey plans to implant patients suffering from chronic diseases with a microchip that will give emergency room staff access to their medical information and help avoid costly or serious medical errors, the insurer said on Friday.

Horizon plans to announce on Monday that it is teaming up with Hackensack University Medical Center in a pilot program where 280 patients regularly treated at the hospital will be implanted with a chip containing a code. The chip would allow emergency room personnel to retrieve a patient's medical record if the individual can't communicate.

The rice-sized microchip is implanted in a patient's right arm above the elbow and can be detected using equipment at the hospital.

The hope is that the chips will help doctors avoid medical errors like duplicating medical tests, dangerous drug interactions and bad diagnoses.

Within the next 30 days, Horizon will start sending letters to patients with chronic diseases explaining the new program and inviting them to participate. The program is voluntary and won't cost the patient any money to participate.

Patients with chronic conditions are the program's target because they are more likely to have serious medical problems that could leave them unable to communicate when they are at the emergency room, said Dr. Richard Popiel, vice president and chief medical officer at Horizon. For example, diabetics with low blood sugar may become confused or unconscious.

He said Horizon will test the program for two years to see if it warrants expansion.

VeriChip Corp. makes the chips and detection equipment. Hackensack already had the equipment because it was part of VeriChip's development program

good idea if uses are limited.

i'm not surprised that the technology is there, seems pretty simple...i'm just wary of the applications from here on out.

what does everyone think?

Unfortunately, technology doesn't prevent human error; you have to assume/hope that the initial information and diagnosis were correct at the start.

And I'm wary too.

Old news... They have been reprinting this article for god knows how long now, at least 2 years and I havn't seen anything come out of it yet. I think it's just a publicity stunt to get veri-chip more money.

this is just a "start"....introducing a tracking device (MC) into the dying or gravely disabled...
next will be new born babies....
btw- the gas co. is implimenting a new sensor in homes to track rate of fuel use...(RIGHT!!)...they say its too costly for humans to continue to take readings off of meters...
stand-the- fuck by.

My kid just got her medical alert ID Dog Tag for Diabetes.
She thinks its cool.

I doubt she would think this was cool with getting injected etc..

I think this concept is good for its intended use.
Much like the Medical ID bracelets/tags etc.

Most all of the electric meters down here are being upgraded with radio transmitter capable meters.

So the meter reader only needs to drive down the street to take readings
vs walking around and dealing with dogs/fences etc. What do I care if someone hacks into the reader system ? So I use a lot of electricity..

yep, I agree. Pretty soon people will not need registration for cars, licenses, credit cards, birth certificates, or any thing of the likes!
Forgive me, I prefer the papers and cards thank you though!

there was a group of ederly people that had those chips inplanted in them down here. It became useful after hurricane katrina for i.d.ing their bodies, as morbid as that sounds.

its a great idea

...in a perfect world

..which it isnt.

you want to have a barcode attached to a bracelet for incoming patients? great. you wanna implant something inside MY body that you can write/do whatever you want with using machines that *I* dont have and so can *never* see what youre really doing....i dont think so.

incorrect diagnoses are less repugnant. ill take my chances. thanks though :)

Soon the media will be reading their sound bites about the lives saved and how, really, everyone ought to take advantage of this wonderful technology.

No police state is complete without implanted micro chips.

There is very good money in the implementation of the police state.

So it will be.

The beneficiaries of the police state will have their news stations told that baby kidnappings are up 400%.

Parents will freak and scramble for these life saving devices.
