I'm trying to save on my electric bill. IDEAS APPRECIATED!!!

I turn the "whole house" heater way down at nite, and just run a portable electric heater in my bedroom at nite with the bedroom door closed.
Seems to save me about a third over running the whole house heater all the time.
Sharper Image has a heater with no fan and no moving parts, controlled by a remote themostat that stays on your bedstand.
Totally quiet while you sleep and no gas fumes.

Programmable thermostats help too...adjust the heat down when you're not there.

Lowe's and HomeDepot many times waive the rental fee on the blower if you buy X number of bags of insulation. However, if you can do fiberglas, it's generally regarded as better because of the higher R value, and it doesn't settle over time. More of a pain though.

I spent $500 insulating my attic, and I also replaced my furnace last year, and my gas bill dropped about $100 a month on level pay.

@ biteme: Have your parents come out of retirement and get jobs at Walmart to help support your electric bill. Have your sister move back in, get off her lazy ass and get a fucking job. Put your daughter to work slaving afterschool in a sweatshop.

How's that for ya', nugga?

Whoa! That's way too much... maybe after you take care of the insulating probs, perhaps you should talk to your electric company and discuss a budget plan; this way you pay pretty much the same thing year round.

Run an extension cord to your neighbors house at night when he isnt looking

Find a girl who will let you sponge off of her and use her electric

If you end up using fiberglass insulation, don`t stuff it in there. Make sure it`s not compacted because that takes away from it`s R value (efficiency). Just lay it on top and let it sit there. Make sure you get all the spots though.

If I were you, I would`nt dismiss the option of a contractor. At least have him come and take a look to give you an estimate. I built my house myself but contrzacted the insulation out to someone because you CAN mess it up, you WILL get crazy insulation dust on you, and it can be not too much more $$ for having someone else do it because they get their insulation so much cheaper and the cost of install is minimal.

PLUS they`ll give you an idea of what needs to be done when they come for an estimate, then you`ll have an idea what to do, even if you don`t hire them.

Call a contractor bro.
