I'm not normally one to post stuff like this...

I don't normally post my personal business on the boards, but in this instance, I feel inclined to share.

I was called downstairs yesterday afternoon at about 4PM to meet with my VP and the CFO. They told me that they're outsourcing some functions of the company, and as a result, they'll need less support, because they're eliminating 22 positions. Consequently, my job as a manager is gone effective June 1.

My department consists of 3 people, myself, and 2 that report to me. They're retaining 2 positions, both of which will report directly to the VP. We're having a meeting this afternoon some time to let the rest of my department know. There's a chance that the woman that reports to me will elect to leave instead, as she already lives about 1.5 hours north of work, and we're moving the office further south. If she goes, I get to stay, but I will most likely look anyway, as it doesn't appear that the bleeding is ever going to stop here, and there does not appear to be a great deal of concern for any employee, regardless of how they perform.

The funniest part of all this is that they've been promoting people left and right to middle management positions, even people that have NO ONE reporting to them. It's absolutely ridiculous, and I intend to tell the CFO that. I'm not burning any bridges, but I intend to be politely honest as well.

It could be worse....I could be gone with no notice, no severance, all that, but I really feel betrayed by a company that I've put 3.5 years into. Suffice to say...it stings a little.

In any case, I'm not throwing a pity party here. This isn't the end of the world. I just felt like sharing a little bit, and getting some stuff off my chest.

Oh, and if anyone knows of any IT contacts in the KC area...shoot me a PM. :D

Good Luck buddy. They are promoting people to make it easier to can them. It happens all the time.

I've managed to survive 3 Reductions In Force in the last 2 years. There is a 4th one coming up this spring, too. I actually looked at these RIFs as an opportunity and managed to get a promotion through all of this.

Change your perspective and thinking.

WODIN - I suppose that can be a possibility, but doean't necessarily it's so.

There have been so many RIF's here that I don't even count anymore. We used to have a running gag that it was Tuesday, who's gone today, because we had about 7 weeks in a row where someone got let go on a Tuesday.

Realisitically, the job market sucks right now. Without a degree or certs, I'm not likely to get another managerial position, which means a step backwards, but just having a job would be good, so I'm looking from that perspective.

I also just met with the CFO, and told him that I thought it was really kind of a shot to the gut to be promoting all these people in other departments, all the while giving me the speech about reducing middle management. He didn't really have an answer for it, but said he appreciated me letting him know.

Sorry to hear about that Project.

It's getting tough everywhere. If you do get to stay, be thankful and just ride it out until something better comes along. Something is better than nothing during times like these.

Good luck buddy!

In the computer industry exprience sometimes outweighs degrees and certs. Certs are a dime a dozen these days...go pick yourself up some, im sure you can. Its true, the market sucks more cock then AAP but i bet you can find a position comparable to what you had or maybe even better....tech geeks always do.

Sorry to hear that broly.
Man, that is SO similar to my situation.
Our co. has been taken over and my department is nothing like the core business. I'm sure that our section is for sale or will be soon. And if it dosent sell we'll probably be turfed. There has been so many layoffs over the last 18 mo its crazy.

I would love to bail outta here before they can boot me but the trouble is that the market here is so shitty that its hard to find an alternative.

Damn P-Ject, sincerely sorry to hear this, I can empathize with you a bit, I work for a company right now that is making headlines everyday, 2 years ago our stock was above 50, now it's junk status, everyday all employees wonder if there job is secure, this situation sucks, but you seem to be quite intelligent, you will find something else, plus you have a fair amount of time to look, you have dedicated time and energy to your current employer, yet they drop you like SSME under a squat rack with the bar and some 2.5's on the end, keep your head up sir, if I was a billionarie I'd give you a mill. peace

You'll find something better. I have a few contacts in D.C. and Cleveland but unfortunately none in KC.

bitch, give me those DC contacts. I'm in IT and I need to get the fuck out of here!

I think ouchie the clown needs a new assistant in Frisco if you are willing to relocate.

Thanks everyone! I know I'll find something, and my boss is being very cool about the whole thing. I've got some transportation issues at the moment, and he's offered to take me to job interviews, which I thought was cool. I told him I'd need some time off to get some things ready to go, and he's very flexible about that. He's basically said that he's willing to do whatever I need to help me find another job.

The last time I did job interviews was before I started working out, and my suit coat doesn't even come CLOSE to fitting. I'm going to see if they can let it out, but I suspect I'll be dropping some cash on new interview attire.

The other nice thing is...if I stick it out til June 1, I get a retention bonus that's pretty substantial. If I time this right, I'll start a new job first part of June, get a windfall from here, and be in better shape than I am now.

Are you looking to get out of the IT business or a different company?

I think Spatts should offer to chauffeur you around. It will impress any proespective employer!

This happened to my husband when we both worked on Wall St. in the mid 80's. He stayed till the end, got the good package, then we relocated to Florida. Best move we ever made. Hopefully things will work out in your favor...just keep a positive attitude and look at all of your options. Sometimes things like this will seem overwhelming and impossible at first, then all of a sudden everything falls into place. Good luck!

Bro.. your boss sounds like a really cool guy. I am sure you will find somthing. You have to... or you'll die.

Good Luck partner!!

similar situation here. i'm a software developer and have survived numerous RIF's. after another one last friday i found out that the development for the products i work on is being moved to india, which means in short time i will be out of a job. i love it here, too. :(

Sorry to hear that brother. I would say "Welcome to software, or welcome to the tech world" but you already know this :)

It happened to me 3 times in a year and a half. :(

My thoughts are with you Project. Hang in there my man.

Here, instead of letting people go, they just get more work and
ask the same number of employees to do more.

Fortunately, I work for the IT branch of the Largest DOD contractor, and business is Stable to growing.

Good luck. Sorry, nothing we have is near KC..

Damn dude... that sucks. So much of these "cut-backs" these days. And with the cost of everything going up, it isn't going to make living any easier... I've heard that gas will reach around 3 bucks a gallon come "war-time"... If companies are going to start laying people off... things could just get worse and worse.

I'll say a prayer for you bro. :)

C-ditty

I know you hate to leave what you've accomplished, but things will work out for you hun. Whether it means something working out there or finding a whole new job, it will work out. And you'll be just as happy. I'll be keeping my fingers and toes crossed.

Just a minor update...

We're doing an office move in July or August, and I thought they might extend me past June 1, but was told last week that that's a no go.

I've interviewed with two companies since news of the layoff came...one offered the job to someone with more experience, and the other extended an offer that amounted to a 50% pay cut.

It just amazes me how bad the market is. I've talked to two consulting/contract companies that I used to work for, and can't even get them to call me back.

I remember looking through the KC Star and there would be a couple of solid pages of IT or computer related openings. Hopefully the market will come back some. Good luck man.
