I'm LIVID!!!!

SO I just bought my new Adidas Ironwork shoes and oly lifting suit and headed down to my local gym to use them for the first time. The last hour of the Sunday night was as quiet as I had hoped it would be. Warmed up by jogging in so I headed over to the free-weight area to do some power snatches.
First set is with the empty bar - where's the bar? Couldn't see the one and only oly bar anywhere. There's some shitty home-style 5ft bars and a whole bunch of mismatched dumbells, but no oly bar! Then I see the sign on the only flat bench:

"Olympic Bar no longer in use due to abuse."

WTF?!

I marched right down to the desk and finding the fitness mis-manager I asked him what was up with the bar.

"someone broke it so we're not going to have one any more as people can't be trusted"

was the best I could get out of him. I explained that people's credit cards that they use to pay monthly dues should be charged for the damage, and that the equipment should be relpaced and the people banned, not the the EQUIPMENT banned! If a goddamn light breaks then you get a new one, not walk around in the dark!

Anyway, I realised that the guy was a freaking idiot and didn't really get on his case, just told him that without an oly bar there was no point in me being a member. What disgusts me is that the gym is council funded, which means that it was built and heavily subsidied by government money!!!

That is the dumbest thing ever! So if some high school kid breaks into the science lab and steals all the test tubes, lab coats, goggles, etc using your gym manages logic, there would be no more science department! That just doesnt make any sense!

So you get your money back from the gym contract? You gonna join a new gym?

What the f*** kind of gym has NO olympic bar!? That's like a necessity to every upper body workout I do. Don't you have any brand names in your area like Gold's or World? I found that at least with those gyms a standard is maintained.

It's part of a chain of gyms across south London so I'm writting to the manager and asking if I can have a 'global' membership extended to me until the bar returns. If he doesn't give me it I'll bury him.

There's no such thing as Gold's etc in London, just shitty nock-off gyms with far too many people and no squat racks, bragging about their dumbells going up to 85lbs.

I looked at a gym the gym across the road from my work and I asked the saels man (as we were going down the stairs to the weight room) if there was the space to do overhead pressing - his answer, a cliassic:

"Oh yeah, if you are sitting down..."

I'm not moving to London.

Ever.

As a matter of fact, if they keep this crap up, I may not ever visit, either.

umm... what are u planning to do?

That's amazing. Speaking of other odd local gym stupidity, there's a huge trend going on right now where these smaller 24 hr fitness places are popping up in my city - 3 in the last several months - great idea where there is little to no staff and you just need the key card to get in (24 hr Fitness is 24hrs only during the week, the weekend is from around 8 AM - 11 PM). There's no swimming pools or baskeall courts or any extra shit, just cardio and weights - the dumb thing is that each one that has opened has less and less free weights, alot of machines, and a tons of cardio equipment - 95% of the available space is filled with tred, bikes, and elypticals - the respect given to the free weights is very small - it looks like pretty soon the trend will go to cardio farms and no weights.

First, how the heck do you "break" an olympic bar? Even the cheapest ones are tested to 500lbs with the more expensive ones tested to 1500lbs. I've seen some of them bent becasue the losers would leave the bar loaded, but I can't see how anyone could brake one of those.

maybe they just got rid of it becasue they didn't like the type of lifts you were doing with it. What kind of bars do they ue for bench press?

Second, what kind of a gym only has one olympic bar anyway? That really sucks ass.

lol @ the sight of muskie with his brand new oly shoes/tights having to make do on the smith machine ;)

Seriously though that really sucks - hope you find a decent gym. I guess you could always just bring your own. My friend went to the same gym as Jesse Marunde and he said he'd bring in his own fat bar (I think it's the Apollo's Axle from IM).

Not to rub it in but I'm at a complete loss as to how a gym can have one Oly bar. I bet there are 15-20 at the gym I'm at now and it's not really a big gym either. Hell, I have one in my basement I'll send to your gym if you'll pay shipping :D

My last gym had one machine each for: seated row/lat pulldown; curls/pushdown; a pec-deck, hammy curls; leg extensions; seated press. It also had a Smith machine, an EZ bar, an Oly bar, 450 lbs in plates, DBs from about 2 oz up to 55 lbs and lots of cardio machines.

Dude, which part of London you in? I live in Ilford, and Dagenham has a Gold's gym. There's also a gym on Ilford High Road, that is almost all free-weights. I guarentee a good workout there!

Is there a difference between an olymic bar and a bench bar. My gym has a bar on their squat racks (there are 3 squat racks at my gym) and the bars look athe same and the bench bars. Theyre all thick and have the thick ends where the plates go on.
I cant believe the place you go to is like that. Youd love where i go. Its a hole in the wall with almost no machines. Its mostly benchs and shoulder pressing stations and freewights

Sounds great but to some people, Ilford is Essex not London.

I live in Peckham and work 12 hour days in the City.

Getting to Ilford is like 45 mins drive EACH WAY from my house after a 30min journey from work to pick up the car that I don't own...

The trains would get me out there for about 20:30 but couldn't get me back...

have u tried fitness first? at least they don't have only 1 Oly bar.. but u might have to put up with all the freaks.. HAHA!!

i'm trying to imagine how someone can break an Oly bar? the only way i can think of to snap the bar in two is to totally compress it!!

They can bend, the bearings wear out, the bolts that hold the ends on can get stripped, etc.

The bar on the deadlift platform at my gym has to be tightened before each use and check periodically. I thnk it's b/c people ALWAYS leave their weights on it after use. Kind of a PITA.

Maybe they do exist, but I've never seen a Fitness First with a squat rack, of sufficeient space in which to Oly lift safely - most don't even have proper matting for the freeweight areas. They really cater to the after office crowd, and they do do that very well.

If you stayed on the train to Ilford, Romford is only 4 short stops, and has a Fitness First 2mins walk from the station (turn right out of station, and its on the right). I cant see why the train wouldnt take you back as long as you cover the zones with your ticket. Ilford Fitness First is a LONG walk from the station.

From a revenge standpoint, that'd probably be better.

ROFL!!!!!!!! Without a doubt, that'd be better. "You take away my OLY bar? OK. I turn your son gay!" :artist: ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!

I apprecaite you trying to help so let me explain:

Fitness First have branches near to my work and home. There is no room in a fitness first suitable to doing Oly lifting OR decent squats or deadlifts. I have never seen a FF with a decent SQ rack or enough weights to go up to 600lbs etc on the bar... You just can't get a good workout in one unless you are a pussy.
Even if the best gym in the world was in Romford, I finish work around 19:30, get in Romford about 20:15 (using the train) then workout for an hour and then go back and wait for a train to get me back to Limhouse, wait for a DLR train to Shadwell, change onto the East London line and go to New Cross Gate and then jog for 10 mins/ catch a bus to Peckham and get home for around 23:30 eat and wash and shower and try to get up at 05:30 to go to work... can't happen!

That last gym I posted is like 15 miles from Peckham, but I guess the commute is a bitch. I'm just used to being about to go 15 miles in 10-15 minutes. Hell, I commute 80 miles a day for work now. But, If you need a good Oly gym for a weekend lifting place, I think the Champion gym would be good. It's listed on the Queensland Weightlifting Association gym site, so it should be a full on training center.

And I'm not even starting from Peckham, I'm in the City. The 15 mile drive from peckham to Ilford where there is a Golds apparently, takes 40-50mins if the roads are clear. Think of LA traffic if it helps...

Damn, I just did a mapquest from Hounslow to London, and the longest stretch is 2.9 miles. The other 12 miles are all under one mile. You guys need freeways or something. lol

I am sure there is a Golds in London, one in Romford.

FAb BB gym in Catford, Skyline gym, owned by a former Ms Olympia competitor

Have you been back since? I still want to know how the original bar ended up breaking. I still believe it's a conspiracy to get you and "your kind" (people doing actual weight training movements) out of the gym.

Golds in Romfod is like I said in essex, not in london.

Catford is only 4 miles away and I'm looking into it - thanks!

Just to clarify, Gold's gym is in Dagenham (not Ilford), which is very close to Ilford - maybe 10 mins in a car.
