If all they were doing was talking regular shit then why not just be mature and let it go?

I could. Basically whoever these guys are, they play on the same rugby club as I, and decided to talk a lot of shit on our clubs message board, which got me in trouble with my girl friend and other people.

Hello again bros...I know this is an old thread, but it kinda pertains to some help I need from you guys.

Some of you know about my situation with the guy who may be scamming me for an $1800 computer. Now I'm thinking he might have gvien me a fake address (as his home address, I know he couldn't lie about the address I sent it to, which was supposedly his office). So what I want to know is...is there any way I could find his address, using his IP address? And if so...how the fuck do I go about finding his IP address? I have a bunch of emails from him, and I talk to him on Instant messenger sometimes...

If anyone knows how I can find this piece of shit...let me know.

Also, if any of you live in the michigan area and want to do me a favor and stop by and pay him a visit...just let me know...and I'll give you all his information...and if you help me find him...trust me I'll make it worth your while;)

Later guys....

No, it's not really practicle to get someone's physical address from their IP address. Certainly not for your average Internet user. The only "practical" way to do this would be to use NMap or some other util to discover which ports are open, then determine OS type (windows flavor) then look for exploits that will basically give you access to their workstation where you can search for documents containing their address (word documents, etc). This is not easy and not legal. You could also go hunt around for canned tools (trojans) that exploit AIM or Yahoo IM to accomplish something similar. Again, not legal and probably a waste of time.

You can do a whois lookup on their IP address at www.arin.net (follow the whois link). In most cases you will just get ISP related info, however you might get lucky and get work place information or if their business is large enough to have their own netblock. You also might try doing lookups on their host name if they're using something other than a generic like aol.com or yahoo.com. Ie: if they have a [email protected] you MIGHT get somewhere by looking into the whois information on "johnsdomain.com" to determine the name/addy of the person who registered it (often this info is faked).

I got a question...how do i get an IP address from an email???

look in the header. You will see "received by:" lines in there as the message gets relayed from server to server.

And what are you expecting to do with these IP address ? Unless you know someone working for their ISP, it's useless. Yeah worth shit. Especially for those dynamic address.....

Go to the MSDOS Prompt in windows under programs.
Type in tracert 209.102.217.100

See what that gives you.

Traceroute will just trace the path the packet takes as it jumps from your computer to the target's IP. Essentially an IP address is useless. You can go to www.arin.net and find who owns the netblock in which the ip address is located. All this is going to tell you is who the person's ISP is. Also you must remember that most dial-up accounts employ what is called a dynamic ip address (it changes every time they log on), so 123.1.2.3 may not be who he was yesterday. Also, many ISP's employ a proxy cache to cut down on bandwidth costs, so all that ISP's traffic may appear to be originating from the same IP address. Unless you are very comfortable with TCP/IP and unix, there is very little you can do without getting yourself in trouble, so just try to let it go.

I have no idea what any of you guys are talking about. I thought IP was that nice little chinaman who keeps sending me tiny little tabs. :p

I dont think too many ISP's use static IP's anymore. Like he said it is almost certain that it is dynamic and it won't do you any good.

Ok, this may be a stupid question for most of you but how do i "look in the header"?

Thanks...

Depends on what are you using for a mail client. Assuming you have been asimilated and are using MS Outlook, just open a message, click "view" then select "options" the header is in the bottom half...

I thought most cable modem and DSN connections have a static IP. Plus, I think most business networks assign static IPs to work stations. I know my IP at the office is static. Now maybe that's only for intranet purposes and outgoing connections are dynamic...who knows. Hey...isn't this the anabolic board? Shouldn't you all be A. lifting B. eating C. juicing D. sleeping E. ficking?

Thanks bro...it worked in my Outlook, any way to do it through hotmail? Karma your way...

I tried in hotmail. Seems to strip the header info off. Yahoo mail you can click on Full Headers and trace the route back to the senders IP or the IP address pool of a internet service provider. A long story, but I sucessfully tracked someone down using this info with nslookup...well worth the little amount of effort it took.

You need to go to "options" (on the top bar to the left of contacts) then "Mail Display Settings" and under "Message Headers" select the "advanced" or "full" radio button.

IP adress

Norton firewall software give you a way to trace them to a network, they have a shareware version too!
