If you have a cat.

Do not give your cat Hartz Advanced Care 3 in 1 or 4 in 1 flea and tick drops. They have been discontinued and should be taken off the shelf. I had to rush one of my cats (Smokey) to the vet to try and get the stuff off his skin and detox his system. The drops have been known to cause seizures. Smokey had some mild tremors and he is acting abnormal. The vet said it will take a few days for the insecticide to mellow out in his system. Hopefully he will be fine soon. He has a mild case, some cats are reacting a lot worse to the stuff (seizures, vomiting).

I thought this would be a "If you have a cat, you are old and smell funny and people don't like you" thread. I'm really sorry to hear about Smokey, and I hope he gets fully well again quickly :(

I've never tried the supermarket-brand flea killers, I stick with Bayer Advantage even though it's expensive. I got several years worth of the stuff from the vet supply place when I bought some Fina pellets last year.

I hope Smokey is okay.

oh your poor kitty
ive never heard of that happening before
il keep that in mind tho

Speaking from a vet tech's point of view, Revolution is the ONLY way to go

Who makes it? How is it applied? Is it expensive? What makes it better than, say, Bayer Advantage?

In my experience, at least with my cats and the fleas in my area, Bayer Advantage works so well that a one-month dose will last me for two or three months. I haven't dosed my cat since June, and he still passes the flea comb test.

bump for big smoke. hope he's ok
Thank you, I'll let you know how it goes.

Smokey is doing better today, but he's still extra loveable and you can tell he is irritated. At least he's moving around more. I hope this passes soon, it's driving me crazy.

There are several reasons but since I'm still learning all of them, I can only comment on a couple.

Revolution is kinda like a one stop shop deal where you get: flea prevention, heatworm prevention, and a couple different types of worms also.

Since I won't pretend that I know more, I can point you to their website.

Do they still make Frontline? That seemed to work well for my cats years ago. I haven't had to treat them for fleas for almost 5-6 yrs so I am not sure what is out now. Boric Acid sprinkled in your carpets is a safe treatment as well for preventative measures.

My cat cannot have any further treatments as she has renal failure. I've been giving her 150cc IV lactated ringers subcutaneously for the last 3yrs and she is doing great! I know this was a flea prevention thread, but if anyone has a cat with renal problems, this is a really effective, non-steriodal treatment. Aside from the 18gauge needle, she does very well.

We love our little pets.

How fast do you give the fluids? Does she have that attractive hump on her back afterwards :p ? I'm assuming you insert the fluid right behind the neck above the shoulder blades or do you rotate it?

Yes, the needle is inserted under the skin around the shoulder blade area. I run in the 150cc ~ 5mins. Almost a steady stream, but just a hint of a drip. We've been doing this together every other day for 3 yrs so I can tell if she's uncomfortable and need to slow it. No rotating, I try to not move the needle or let the line lay on her back. Just whatever comfort I can provide. Pet her the whole time.

Yeah, she has a liquidy hump that drifts down to one leg/shoulder. Makes her look pretty pumped up. :)

Frontline is what I gave them the last couple of times and it worked great, why I switched to Hartz, I don't know; stupid move.

Smokey is now breating normal and doesn't seem to be irritated, he is laying in one of his normal spots which is making me feel a hell of a lot better.

I'm sorry, I just remembered that the Vet told me about another brand that should not be used (Bio Spot), she said that there are no talks of it being taken of the shelf but she recommends not using it.

Thanks for posting that info!! Glad to hear Smokey is doing well....

In general I would never trust flea meds that you can purchase at your local A&P. I guess it was a lesson learned...thanks for the info...

For further info on flea products see below...i'm reciting from memory...

Revolution is the all in one pill. It works pretty well but all it does is sterlize the fleas so they can't lay eggs. This means the flea has to actually bite your pet for this to work, which means fluffy is still going to be itchy

Frontline and Advantage sterilize and kill the fleas. Frontline is great because it kills fleas for 3 months and ticks for one month.

The "advantage" of Advantage is that it attaches something to your animals dander that will go into your carpet when your animal scratchesand it kills the fleas living in your carpet.

Personally I go with Frontline. You get 9 months of flea protection or 3 months oftick protection in one package. The prices are pretty competitive no-adays because of outfits such as petmedexpress.com and the like.

I hope this helps.

Give Smokey lots of hugs and kisses for me.

Thanks for the info, I'm actually scared to try anything ever again. As for the hugs and kisses, he gets alot but I can always give more.
