If you could pick only one calf exercise

Would it be seated or standing calf raise? Which is more beneficial to both the soleus and gast.? Thanks!

Standing works both the gastrocs and the soleus, but the seated calf raise pretty much isolates the soleus. So I guess the standing is better. I do both though; 4 sets of standing at 10-15 reps and 2/3 sets of seated at 15-25 reps.

I would pick the lower angled platform of a leg press machine in a second. I like this so much better then a standing calf raise. When I do standing calve raises, most of the machines I have used have a flat platform that makes the arches of my feet tire out and ache way before my calves do. The angled lower platform for calves on the leg press (atleast at my gym) is awesome. I can get a full range of motion, load on a ton of weight (after all it is for leg press), and I get none of that crappy pain in the arches of my feet. So I guess when all is said and done my answer is standing.......even though I am in fact sitting down. :)

How can you get a good stretch at the bottom? Or don't you ... ?

With this exerise I don't. . . I prefer raising up for 2 seconds then returning to the bottom (flat footed position). It is important for me to keep constant stress on the muscle.

When it comes to seated toe raises, I will incorporate the stretch.

DC's methods work best on the seated toe raises. . .your calves will be barking fire through the entire workout.

Single leg, standing.

I rarely do these so I'm far from the calf specialist, but the few times I did have been brutal. My current training cycle has me a little more focused and consistent with calf work.

Standing with knees bent. To ensure a full stretch I use a 4X4 block with a section of rubber mat attached to the top. I do them barefooted. Provides great control.

honestly. i have never done calf exercises. i have 22 inch calves, i think what helped me was the fucked up style of running i did in high school before one of my best freinds/former track coach showed me the light. this may be genetic to a point, as i have very large legs and hips.

You freak!!! Of course in a good way;) .

i have found the miracule to calf size is just getting bigger. with every 25 lbs i gain i get about a half an inch to an inch as long as the weight stays on for about 3-6 months. and weight's dont change much on calf raises.

but sprinting up hill backwards is my favorite.

but between the 2 you recomended i would say standing.
