The right way to do Hawaii is to not just stay in Waikiki. Get outta the tourist area. I went by myself and met tons of people and mostly went to the local places,ie beaches, bars, restaurants. The locals are great and know how to show you a good time, plus the women are outstanding!!!!! I also spent time all over the Island, head up to the North Shore, great area and ton's of fun. Only go to Maui if you are with a woman, it is geared towards couples and is quieter.

Waikiki can get old if that is the only place you go, but the entire island of Oahu has so much to offer. You can get just about everything you can on the other islands in some form here, aside from the Volcanoes on the big island. On top of that there is of course far more night life here than on other islands. If you stay in Waikiki you are pretty stupid anyway though.
