i know a few situations in where that happened in the nhl

steve yzerman took a paycut twice i think to stay with the detriot redwings

paul kariya and temu selane worked out deals with the might ducks and the avalanche to take less money to play together..

im never going to be in the position to turn down millions of dollars but i would think that i would rather have 3 mil and play with friends on a winning team then take 6 mil to play on a losing team.
