So my wife and I are leaving the gym today only to see two Asian guys (who I see at this gym every Sunday) yelling at this old guy who is sitting in his car. Next thing I know one of the Asian guys is standing in between the car door and the old guy sitting in the drivers seat. The dude grabs the old guy by the shirt and whails him in the head twice. My wife starts to yell at the dude sayin "Stop hitting that man, what are you doing?" The two keep yelling at the guy as he closes the door and drives away, not before rolling down the window and screaming "Losers". So the two explain to my wife, as they get in their car and drive away, that he had made some comment to them. While this was going on I was walking towards the two guys just in case one says something to my wife, I was going to lay the smack down. They leave and my wife tells me that the old man said to the 2 Asian guys that he had killed their grandfather, obviously referring to either the Vietnam war or WW2. Instantly I felt ashamed and really pissed that we had interjected. Next Sunday I am going to make it a point to explain to the two guys that if I were in their shoes I would have done the same thing. And if I see that old man again, I'm going to let his geriatric ass know how disgusted that I am that he ever wore a US Military uniform. Thats just disgraceful and he should be cracked in the mouth.

Your a little quick to judge. I had to call the police on a old guy who was having a complete fit about a Japanese flag being flown at our hotel. It was under the US flag and the state flag so it was being displayed properly for a large group that booked the entire hotel. The old guy had been in WW2 and had lost many many people to the "japs" and had an axe to grind. Basicly I agree with him, if I watched my friends being killed by a group of poeple in a large number I would be pissed at that group till I died. He hates them for a reason and just because you weren't around for, it doesn't mean he is wrong. What he was doing in the hotel lobby had to be dealt with but no one involved liked doing anything about this guy.

HUH??? That guy tells some Asian kids that he doesn't know that he killed their grandfather. Killing someone in war is not supposed to be something you gloat about. Serving your country is. How do you gloat over killing someone's grandfather, father, husband, brother, whatever. That person is only doing what you yourself are doing, serving your country. To clarify one thing, I am an American citizen living in Amsterdam. My current location is correct and I also sometimes make references to times I did live in the states.

Secondly, the title of the thread was racist old man. I agree all parties involved acted like idiots. The old man shouldn't have said what he did (but then again I did not hear him calling the kids, gooks or chinks or something racist). BUT because he was a WHITE man that said those things, the asian kids took it as a racial slur and hit him. The apathetic posts that followed that imply that the old guy deserved it. The old man probably stated a fact. That is what I have a problem with. Facts get beaten down when the listener doesn't like what he hears.

Blame the problem on the white's racism instead of looking at the root of the problem, which in this case are violent youth. (granted the old man probably should have kept his mouth shut, but then again what prompted him to say something like that? Perhaps they provoked him?)

What??? This man WAS wrong. I could give a shit if his friends were killed by Japanese soldiers 50+ years ago; what the hell does this mean in the present context?? This kind of thinking is used to prevent progress. If we construe all people who are "like" others and thus somehow complicit in the crimes of their ancestors, or others like them, gives credence to such ridiculous notions as "slave reparations". This man needs to realize that the war occured in the context of the 1940's, not 2004. These men are no more responsible for the deaths of Americans, than I am for the rotation of the earth. He will remain stuck in the mire of the past until he dies.
