Ideas anyone?

I'm planning on working at a day camp for girls this summer. Tomorrow at 3 p.m., I meet with the director. I am supposed to have some ideas of classes that I could have with the girls. THe ages range from 6-16. They will be grouped by age. Does anyone have any ideas they could share with me to take to her tomorrow? I would appreciate all the help. :)
 
ummm....given that they are girls, what i would like to do at that age is probably not relavant and might scare you :devil:

what are girls that age interested in? maybe you could give them a talk on life skills, like how to properly write a letter or fill out a cheque/forms , or first aid or cookery or sewing or a histpry talk

Thanks Danielson. And no no no, they aren't all in one class. That's the ages of the girls at the camp. They are grouped into different classes and activities by age. I'm just not sure what ages I will be dealing with.
 
What kinda day camp is this exactly? Like an afterschool thing? Do you have any limit to what you can do with these girls (materials wise...like do you have access to a variety of different things/equipment/resources/etc?)
 
During the school year, it's an afterschool program for the girls. I volunteer there every week. However, during the summer, it's a day long program for the girls, where they have different little classes. We take them on little field trips. They go swimming, to the library, etc. We have a variety of materials to work with, and I suppose more can be bought if needed.
 
Making lipgloss is totally girly and fun and easy. There are tons of web recipes and you just need candy oil for flavor and old lipsticks if you want to tint it.

I love it. THat will definitely be raised as an activity for the girls. However, I still need to think of some things that could take a good little amount of time to serve as a class. THat could be presented as part of a Girls are Great type thing or something.
 
I was gonna suggest something similar to Spattersons idea! Any type of art projects would be good....music activities...sports(tennis, volleyball, karate, any type of physical fitness)...nature walks...cooking classes...storytelling/writing workshops...just some ideas! I dont know how well these will help...but I teach elementary school and have used all of these ideas in my class and they seem to work well! Good luck! :)

Then just go with it from there. Words will flow like water. ;)

For real though... good luck... should be a good time for the girls, and yourself.

I have nothing to add at all. I just couldn't let a Phatchik thread go by without posting in it. :)

Actually, my best freind runs a lot of summer programs for kids. I'll ask him what he suggensts....
 
kids are easy, I volunteered at a school and ran the recess and taught them stuff like math after, plus my sister would have lots of input but oh well

Good icebreaker.

When they come into the room...tell them your name and talk to them for just a minute. Don't give them ANY personal information about yourself.

Give them a quiz.

1) How old am I?

2) What kind of car do I drive?

3) Do I have a dog or a cat? What kind?

4) What does my boyfriend/girlfriend look like?

5) What sports do I like?

You can make up some others too. It can take about 20-30 minutes total if you really describe it a lot and let them be creative. Go over the correct answers with them..one by one. Let 2-3 students give and explain their answers for each one before you answer them.

After it is over...talk about how we look at people and think that they are one type of person when really they are not. How our perceptions and beliefs direct our thoughts of a person before we even know them.

I like to do this with different groups in a day...with each group I will wear different clothes, inroduce myself in a different manner, and will talk about different things before we begin the quiz...so that I can see that how I act in the first five minutes (or less) can influence their total perception of me.

That's a really great idea. I like it.

See, here is my problem. I need some ideas for something that I could do with the girls over the course of a few weeks. This won't be just one class with them. The class will last a while. Any ideas?
 
How many times will you be seeing them...everyday...an hour each..how many?

What interests you a bit?

How can you tie that into them?

How can you tie it into a 6 year old and a 16 year old?

The 6 year olds won't be with 16 year olds. The girls will be split up by ages. I'm not sure how the classes will go. They may be every day. They might be every other day. They might even be once a week. I'm not really sure. And as far as my interests, I am simply trying to think of some things that would be good for the girls, and that I could actually do.
 
You ought to teach the older girls, say 14+, how to give head without dragging their teeth. That is a skill the whole world will appreciate someday.
 
Well, the interview went well. She had some ideas of her own about what I could do with the girls. She thinks I would be best to work with ages 9-11. That works for me. She loved some of the ideas I named thanks to you all. Thanks a bunch! :)
