It sounds cold. :cold:

I bet that one or more of the military guys here have at least been through there.

Iceland == Greenland
and Greenland == Iceland

Or so Leif Erikson says so.

Yeah, I've been. Pretty, very unique, small (population-wise, like 100,000 folks or so I think), very friendly people, expensive, great nightlife (surprisingly) and absolutely nothing to do once you’ve seen the sights (mainly the warm geothermal springs).

Icelandair usually has great deals from the east coast to Europe (through Reykjavik) so if I’d do it, I’d just stop over for a night or two, get a feel for the place and then move on (if you’re already going somewhere else that is).

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a nice place, but it’s just not the most exciting place imho.

(MrMuscle is from Norway)

I've nver been but have known several people that are from those countries (Norway, Iceland, Denmark) and the general consensus is that is isn't "exciting". Beautiful, yes. The people are very warm but it is FREAKING BITTER COLD! LOL I've also been cold that when it is REALLY COLD (as it is during most of the time everyone tends to hibernate) but when the warm weather comes around (sadly only a short period of time) that everone comes back to life. Perhaps it would be best to plan a trip around this time of year.

I live in Reykjavik, have full time since '97, first visited in '90. My wife is Icelandic (read: crazy, beautiful, strong-willed, stubborn, fantastic) and all three of our boys were born here.

Any questions in particular? I would be happy to answer. Being the walking tourist guide is fun, but my typing is slow today, so I have to avoid the full book length descriptions. Here are few shots from near my house:

There is a wicked film called 101 reykjavik.

Worth a download/rental.. it's an interesting funny film (geezer smokes dope and shags his lesbian mother's lover, bjork music etc) filmed in Iceland..

Hey, anything is bitter cold to you cali women! lol

Its not that bitter cold, not in Reykjavik, anyway. We are on the south coast that benefits from a northern tongue of the gulf stream, so its rarely as cold here as it is in, say, Maine. Most of the winter we dont have snow in town, and it often rains in the dead of winter. Right now its about 25-28 F, so thats not so bad. I grew up north of chicago, and THAT is bitter cold. Michigan? Montana? MUCH colder than Reykjavik.

Up in the western Fjords your spit will freeze before it hits the ground, but thats not where the population centers are, for good reason!

Oh, summer. SWEET summer, 24 hours of daylight... I think alot about summer this time of year ;)

I like the pics... must be great to have all that pure, unspoiled land around you. A far cry from the remaining 'wilderness' here in the states.

Its not Shangri La, and its not for everyone, but I am lucky financially so many of the worries are minimized and most importantly:

Some of the best schooling in the world, and its public and there are no guns in the schools. Add that to health care for everyone, and the cleanest capitol city in the world, least polution, etc. and it works fine for me.

For ever? I don't know, but it fits the 10 year plan.

Chefwide: did you move there after you met your wife? Was it hard to find a job for yourself being american, moving to Iceland?

I dated a guy in high school whose step-brothers & step-mom are Icelandic. One of the boys was named "Thor."

OK, that's just incredibly dense. I (in my own little naive world) think all kids should get the privilege to live in some other culture/country than their own. If you've ever met kids that are truly multi-cultural/bi-continental (or whatever you want to call them), you know that they usually WAY ahead of their peers. Can you think of a better education for them? Not only can they effortless absorb at least two languages before puberty (most likely more than that), they can also truly understand other cultures. The world is their oyster when they grow up. Why not give them that if you have a chance?

Wait a minute.... You mean it ISN'T A BAD THING?!?!?

or

A CRAZY THING?!?!!?

or

A SELFISH THING?!?!?!

...for a mother to want to give her children that opportunity? For her to TRUST THEIR CARE TO THEIR FATHER WHILE SHE BUSTS HER ASS STARTING WITH NOTHING, SACRIFICING BEING THE CUSTODIAL PARENT FOR A SHORT TIME WHILE SHE DOES EVERYTHING SHE CAN TO OFFER THEM A LIFE LIKE THIS?!?!?!!!

WHAT THE FUCK COULD SUCH A SELFISH WHORE LIKE THAT EVER HOPE TO ACHIEVE WITH SUCH A FUCKING HAIRBRAINED IDEA?!?!

Yes, that quote speaks volumes! Imagine a mother wanting to offer her children the opportunity to be WORLD CITIZENS.

Actually we met here. I left my restaurant on the upper east side to come over here for a three month gig consulting on a Dinner/Dance club (read: $$$) that turned into a year. She worked for the same parent company.... the rest is history! We moved back to the states for a few years, we moved to Antigua to live in the sun for a year (whoa, i liked that A LOT), then back to states for business and eventually back here after our first boy was born. Just made sense really.

When we met she was young, I was foolish, we made beautiful music together. LOUD beautiful music. Got me evicted from my first appartment, actually.

Jobs? yech. yeah, its hard here. A lot less surplus income, if any, for most people. Luxuries are very heavily taxed, VAT here is 24.5%, income tax is 38% base. People here deal with a lot less in the way of the frivolous things we think we need in the states.

There does come a time when you have to decide on what is most comfortable: a sustainable, safe way of life or a huge empty walled in house in a gated guarded comunity and yard full of toys. I chose the best possible atmosphere for my children over my own selfish lusts. It gets frustrating some times, but I can let my 5 year old walk to school and you can park the baby carriage outside the store WITH THE BABY IN IT! I dont know anywhere else in the world that I could do that.

The sense of family and what that is worth is very strong here as well. My son has a living Great Great Grandfather (read: they breed YOUNG here)!! all of his uncles and aunts and cousins live within 15 minutes of us. Its a totally different world here than what I knew.

The total comercialized capitalist materialist would implode here. Matt, you would HATE it here. LOL. Many Icelandic kids that go to the states never return for the simple reason that all that flash and cash is very seductive. Once you have kids, your priorities change, at least they should. I come second, for good reason. I like it that way.

She’s an egotistical, narcissistic and self-centered WHORE. WHORE I TELL YA.

It would be like... I don’t know... as if the most powerful country in the world would elect a president who’s been outside his own country twice (let’s say to Mexico and Canada--just for arguments sake) before he’s elected. Insane. Would never happen. Unless of course that country is the same thing as the universe. Just rambling. Silly me.

(What’s wrong with me. Why did I go there? WHY? Flame-war he we come...)

You're describing my childhood (in Sweden). No such thing as locking your doors at night. Why?

Up until ten years ago or so, my parents still never locked their doors unless they went away overnight.

Now they've got an alarm system...

You persevere.

You do these things not because they are easy, but because they are what is right.

Your know your path and you are painfully aware that the detractors need their vitriolic effluvia to stay afloat in a world that has no real love, no real sacrifice.

Can there be lasting gain without some innocence being lost? Your comfort once so cherrished becomes a burden that holds you back from delivering what you were born to do with every fiber of your soul.

You kids will know, but even should they never learn the truth, your contribution does not change.

Darlin' my children know the truth... I waited until I was secure that they had seen it and understood it.

The only thing that went wrong was that I made the fatal mistake of trusting someone that I SHOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO TRUST THEM TO.

Luckily, due to a chain of chance circumstances I became aware of what a HYUGE mistake I had made before anyone had had any irrepairable harm come to them. I am sitting on pins and needles now hoping to all that is correct in the universe that until the proper authorities are given ALL the facts, no further harm will come to them.

The mistake I made was not that I left the US and moved to a place that I thought (AND STILL BELIEVE) would be a better place to raise them than the area where we currently reside. THE ONLY MISTAKE I MADE WAS THAT I TRUSTED THEIR CARE TO SOMEONE THAT I SHOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO TRUST THEM TO.

Chefwide, Hellorhih20 - I can't thank you enough for enlightening many Americans.

One of the books that I am working on (It has been in the works for a year now.) is a book that is the first of a series. It is geared towards expanding the minds of American children; to spark their curiosity to venture out beyond the boundaries of the comforts of "their own rooms"; to go on GRAND ADVENTURES!... TO SEE THE REST OF THE WORLD.

Yes, I illustrate and write books for children.

Not bad for a pole-sliding, 2$, cheap-trick, dumbassed, selfish whore who essentially abandoned her children, eh?

PS - of all the mountains of MY internet postings (that includes everything that YOU ALL posted up on any thread that I had anything to do with) that were printed out and submitted as "evidence" I SERIOUSLY doubt that this thread will show up in front of a judge.

You do actually have options here. Nobody forces you to read any post or any thread. You can scroll past posts by members whose words you woudl rather not read. You dont have to click links to threads by the same members. Or God forbid, use the ignore button.

So how about you get lives and move on........

if all else fails just move one

commend you on trying to do something bikinimom

It is amusing how this thread became the "bash America" thread, when I can't find a post critiqueing the US vs. Iceland.

I just love to see the condescension of non-Americans, who constantly scream about the arrogance of Americans.

"vs."? I am not so sure any such post was suggested. I live in Iceland, I am an american, I love the country of my birth and like living here, no big deal and no big mystery.

My only observation is that in my life I have lived in six different countries, speak three languages (working on my fourth and fifth right now) and think of the world as a group of countries.

Most of my friends from the U.S. still speak only English and are not concerned about their kids learning another language, cannot fathom living in another country unless it was required by the service, and think of the world as the U.S. and THEM, all of which is unfortuneate in that their lives could be so much more interesting if they weren't so insular. I feel bad for anyone that goes out of their way to limit their life experience then complains about 'not understanding' other points of view. Self defeating, no?

The comment I made was of sarcastic nature. If you feel different then I am not sure how I can help you feel better. The comment was made toward Bikinimom, not you. Bottom line, as a way of being courteous, I just had to let her know that she was placed on my ignore list (the list of unsuccessful people). Nothing wrong with that as far as I am concerned.

Shut up please?

Didn't your momma ever teach you that it is better to stay silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt....?

Darlin' if you had gotten 1/10 of the garbage hurled at you that I had perhaps you might feel a tad bit different. For you to make such a comment, it would be a likely assumption on my part that you know EXACTLY what I am talking about so please don't go there with the "innocent me, I am only an internet sheep" act as so many others who have made themselves look foolish do.

I have yet to hear ONE APOLOGY from any poster that made countless vile and offensive posts directed directly towards me spewing endless garbage that "they read somewhere" as if it was gospel truth.

Now that peeps who DON'T EVEN KNOW A THING ABOUT ME OR MY PREVIOUS SITUATION post up opinions that echo mine -

I am supposed to PLEASE SHUT UP AND STOP TRYING TO GET "THE LAST LAUGH".

It isn't about "the last laugh", sugar. The circumstances of my reality and the reality of my children are hardly laughable. This is about V-I-N-D-I-C-A-T-I-O-N.

And Chefwide - your comments about viewing the world from the frame of reference of WORLD COMMUNITY, instead of US and THEM - I COULDN'T AGREE MORE!!! If you had seen all the backlash, how I had my head handed to me because I wanted to move my children outside the US. It was unbelievable!

You still will not believe how many people think that what I am proposing is absolutely INSANE. (Only Americans think this - not American bashing... I am an American as well.)

"No judge would allow such a thing."

Now what does that say about the US?
