I.V glutamine

Reakt

New member
Since we now know oral Glutamine is BS and its only proven to be effective via I.V. What if i I.V'd it? I reckon i could get atleast 0.5g in an insulin syringe, how much would be a safe dose? Or could anyone point me in the direction of some info that would help me please, i've been googleing my ass off and cant find jack.

IV glutamine is not commonly used in most settings..I generally hang 5% Dextrose 1/2 normal saline soln c/ KCl, lactated ringers, or just saline with the patients i have had,and IVPB antibiotics. It would be used in certain patient populations that had disorders with absorbtion, various bowel inflamatory conditions, critical care settings, maybe geriatric. A normal healthy individual would gain little to no benifit from this and put themselves at risk with infection from trying to hang a bag of Glutamine with macrodrip tubing. most physicains would prescribe total parenteral nutrition before they consider IV glutamine an option. Dont quote me on this but i believe the dosages they used with glutamine was 20-40g/day...The route you suggested using an insulin syringe would not be effective because of the large volume needed, the bevel of the insulin syringe may cause problems trying to insert in the vein and may become occluded with glutamine because of the small bore..

Most of the studies on effectiveness of IV glutamine were done on elderly and other populations with poor oral intake of calories and protein...At that point with the elderly anything will help...It is more common to see an ensure shake or other type of similar product used over an IV preparation of glutamine because it is hard to get a vein on some of those elderly..and when you do get one they often colapse
