Japanese aren't Christians. Thus, they must be evil, right? You should have hated this movie.

That is such stereotypical response it is not even funny. There are lots of Japaneese that Christians. And sure I didn't like the budda parts but the battles and the bravery were awesome.

I know. I know. You see the movie it was really pretty good. Better than I though but I had pretty low expectations when I first saw it advertised.

This has become one of my all time favorite movies. I bought it at lunch on tuesday when it first came out and saw it four times in the theater. Ever since seeing Shogun as a kid I have been enamoured with the samurai culture. This movie showed a great depiction of the end of the samurai and the start of modern Japan. Also gave a great feeling of sadness at the loss of the old for the sake of the new.

Cheers,

What's interesting is the samurai throughout 90% of their history did very little fighting and a whole lot of sitting around writing poetry and thinking about philosophy. Eventually, they had to get their lazy asses to work and that sums up the end of the samurai.

LOL! They were the top of the food chain in fuedal Japan. No need to fight when you don't have to. :)

oh the only thing I thought was just stupid was when they ran against 8 gattling guns. Bravery is one thing stupidy is another and that was the stupidiest thing I have ever seen in a war situation except when the british were stupid and lined up to take shots at each other. But I still think running against 8 gattling was stupidier. another thing was stupid was their refusal to use guns. I mean even the indians started using guns against the union. They realized these bang sticks are effective.

That is why most people don't understand the Samurai, you are looking at it from a western point of view. To a Samurai there is nothing but honor. That is why they killed themselves from the shame of a defeat. To have not ridden against the gattling guns would have been a great shame. Either way they were dead, but by sacrificing their lives they served a higher purpose.

Killing themselves I always thought was stupid too. I lump them in there with Japaneese kamakazee pilots and them moron towel heads that blow up themselves with others. The only time taking your own life is noble in my book is when you do it to save your friends. Like when an American GI will run back to certain death to pick up a wounded soldier or when they jump on a grenade. That is noble but running foolishly against gattling guns is stupid I am sorry I just don't see it any other way. If I was going to die for my country I would have been trying to take a few more out with me by hiding behind trees, or jumping them some other time. Or better yet sneaking up and the gattling gun dudes and using it on them. Kinda of like what Clint Eastwood did when he played the OUtlaw Josey Wales.

But it might be like you said us americans just think different. I think we think smarter seems like staying alive should be your main goal when you are alive.

I think americans only think smarter from an americans point of view. You are using your own values to judge others.......I wonder how it would look if you used their values to judge yourself.

Well who gives a crap. I would be alive and they would be dead. Right? The only entity I would die for other than my family is my God. They would kill themselves for the emporor even considered him God. IF bush, kerry, clinton or even George Washington told me to kill myself I would tell them to bite my butt.

You missed the point.........they were going to die anyway.

Comparing Bush, Kerry etc to the emperor is kinda naive. As you say the emperor had god like status.........and you say you would die for your God. Doesnt that mean that you are similar to the samaurai in terms of your beliefs?

Why is it naive? He is our commander and chief just like the emperor is theres. I know my God can't die while their god, a man ,can. Hell no, I would not kill myself for no man that is moronic. I am sorry it is. Stupid as crap.

Whether or not the emperor fits into your perception of God is neither here nor there. They regarded him as a god, as you do for your God, so the belief is very similar in each case.

Well I guess I see what you are saying.(are you surprised delinquent?) I would still not kill myself for someone even saying they were(if I were them unless I saw them do some incredible stuff like blow away David Copperfield). And I certainly wouldn't kill myself for losing in battle that is just stupid stupid stupid.

Just one thing.........whats with the delinquent statement?

Delinquent: n. someone, esp. young person, guilty of offence or misdeed.

What was my offence?

Your last part sums it up. Eastern and western thoughts are just too far different to be easily comprehended by the other. Samurai put into practice out western idealisms of honor, courage, loyalty, and service.

The movie is a collection of BS. They never ran against Gatling guns. In fact, the last battle (which really happened) was nothing but a bunch of hopeless people getting bombed 24/7. The battle you saw never happened. The way it happened was pathetic but of course, Hollywood doesnt want you to know that.

Oh and they had rifles and antique mortars. God bless Hollywood....

It is funny that a thousand year old culture (and more so) needs an american drunkard to save their day. Typical Hollywood. :)
But it was an entertaining movie, though. And I like american films, keep it up people

I haven't seen it, because I figured it's another Hollywood distorted pice of shit, and will never stand up to any Japanese movies about that period.
Looks like I was right.

By the way, the first thing that immediately pissed me off, was the name of the movie. I hope they do not mean to tell me that Tom Cruise is "The Last Samurai".

If I remember correctly, the last samurai lived on some small island, and would not beleive that WWII was over (and that Japan did not win).

sounds like a pretty unfulfilling main goal

Historically, the German army provided the military expertise to train and equip the Japanese army during that time period. Pretty much the entire world discounted the American experience during the Civil War, especially after the Franco-Prussian war of 1870. Going into WWI the European powers had no idea the bloody carnage they were about to endure.
