i have a potential client coming in for a free session soon.his goal is to put on more muscle/weight. hes already in awesome shape and has great potential.the only problem is he dislocated his knee about 4 or 5 months ago and has only had surgery on one leg.how can i train is legs to get big if i cant really put too much stress on them?

while it's serious bump in the road, it's not a dealbreaker. have him continue his rehab exercises for the knee, blast him on upper-body. if you have the facilities to do it, get him in a swimming pool for some of his cardio. find out more details on what his surgery entailed. if it wasn't major reconstructive surgery, his knee might be in better shape than you think. But make sure you're on the same page as his doctors. THat's the most important thing here. hope this helped.

You'll need to directly touch base with his physical therapist and talk about his restrictions. He may not be honest with you and you don't want the liability. Secondly, at first until you fully understand his restraints and healing process keep him on machines or hammer strength. I.e. leg press, quad extensions, ham curls etc. He will feel his limits above and beyond direction from the therapist. Building up the muscle around his knee joints is key to recovery. And stretch, stretch, stretch.

You also may want to consider a product like Biofreeze to apply before and after his workouts.

Free? Hmmmm....

leg presses. use lower weight target 15 reps with slow movement. restrict the motion range at the top and bottom (dont go all the way down or all the way up) do a negative at the end of every set. he will have to spot himself as usual with hands on knees but you should spot also. knee wraps may also be a good ideah.

i wold stay off the extentions for a while

free first work out session. every member gets a free session with a personal trainer.i had him come in today and worked out his upper body.he really liked the experience and ended up signing a deal.i talked to him more about his legs and found out that one leg he had torn his acl very badly and had surgery years ago.his other knee was dislocated a few months ago and hasnt had an mri on it yet.of course i plan on speaking with his doc about it as well.

thanks for the help everybody i really appreciate it.
