I need HELP!!!

I know this post is old, but I fell obligated to lend whatever help I can since you have given me such great advice in the past. I know many fellow athletes who have had back sugery, and some who have had back and hip surgey, and all of them have been able to make a complete recovery because they adhered to their rehab schedules like fucking champs. Most rehab scheduels are designed for 70 year old women, but an athlete can recover from a surgery much quicker than the avergae joe. I know that you are around 40, but I also know that you are in great shape and are most likely much tougher than the average surgical recovery patient. Apply your BB dedication to your recovery and your surgical procedure will seem like an elongated workout. It's easy to recover from injuries as long as you are disciplined. Obvioulsly you are...apply it to your rehab, and you back will be better than your days as a pussy hunting 20 year old in less than six months.
 
Bro, in '84 I had surgery to remove a disc between L4 and L5. There was no fusion, just the disc removal. I was in pain exactly like you describe but I was scared to death of getting cut. I finally had no choice and had the surgery and it was the best thing I could have done. The rehab was long but well worth it. After the surgery I had absolutely no back, or sciatica pain at all. A few pointers though...first, take the time to find the absolute best docs you can possibly find and next, get a real good rehab. Take your time, do everything they tell you and you'll come out of it 100%. All the best to you!

how long before you were back in the gym and how long before you were at 100%
 
i got hit by a truck in montana 2 years back. i was going down the road, racing my friend who was by my side, we were going about 34-36 mph when i got hit. there was also a third guy, and he was back some 20 yards from us. apparently, some asshole in a faded blue utility truck (early 80's Ford F100 type) passed the my friend 20 yards back, and honked. the guy was pissed or something that we were in the road. so what does he do? he comes up along my side, and before i can react, he swerves into me, and down i go. i tumbled, and got some seriously bad road rash, but i didn't break anything (don't know how it happened). anyway, the guy never stopped. no one bothered to catch his license plate number cause they all wanted to see if i was ok. called 911. they got to the seen 5 min later. a detective set out to find the guy, but nothing ever turned up. so, if you're in bozeman montana, and happen to see a that truck (you know, with the tool boxes where the box should be), fucking tell me. cause there can't be more than one of them out there. i never saw it the rest of that summer whiile i was there. but i never did see another truck matching that description.
 
Here's a long answer to you short question, sorry... :)

To be honest, I don't think I felt completely 100% until aproximately a year after. But also being be honest, a lot of that may just have been all in my head. But I didn't feel any pressure to get back to working out at the time. Perhaps that's because I was only 23 and felt good enough physically that I didn't need to. Now that I'm 41, I might feel that pressure, as you do. But I do know that a year after, I truly was 100%. I had absolutely no problems with my back whatsoever wrt pain and felt I could lift anything in any way that I did before. It was a great feeling. Your rehab, via physical therapy is everything, however. Take it slow, and do that right and you're golden. But as far as pumping serious iron, I wouldn't touch a weight until the PT doc gave their go-aheads, for me that was aproximately a year.

A few other things: I had a discectomy, which is simply removing the floating pieces of free disc. This can also be done with something called micorsurgery which I didn't have, but is the absolute best and results in the smallest rehab time. Also, I know they used to fuse vertabrae (sp?) after disc removal but I don't think that's done much anymore. But nonetheless I would steer away from that if you could.

But after having gone through it all, I really don't think people should be as afraid as they generally are. That surgery is so routine today. But just remember to go through all of the PT, that's most definitely the key.

hey gang i've decided to get surgery maybe this week, i will know for sure tomorrow on the date but i know i have no choice now..i will be getting a Microdiscectomy if any of you are familiar with this......so wish me luck gals and guys .
