I need a decent laptop computer. Any suggestion?

Basically, I just need it for word processing type shit, but I don't want to be too limited by buying a piece of crap. And keep the price range low.

What should I look for? What features do I HAVE TO HAVE in a laptop?
 
Also, if I get a DVD player in it, what type of connections do I need on the back to be able to route it to a TV? What does the TV have to have?
 
You will need some type of S-vidoe adapter, most labtops don't come with those, but TVs do.

Honestly if you don't know alot about computers, call up Dell (they are cheap and make a decent product) tell them what you want, they will actually piece together your personal labtop. They offer great service, and a good price. You could always go to a place like Best Buy, they are good too, but they may not have what you want, nor can they piece together something for your individual needs.

Well, it's mostly for word processing. College work type stuff. But a DVD player would be nice for those down times. Bare basics are 10 gig drive, 750 MHz processor, 6x cd-rom drive and 56k modem. A DVD player would be nice, but not necessary.
 
Toshibas are the best. I just bought one after MUCH research. I spoke with computer guru's everywhere and got the same answer: Toshiba.
 
Seriously. I have a Dell Inspiron but the Optiplex is good as well.
Dell has a Combo DVD / CD drive that fits in a Bay. This bay can be used for the DVD/CD drive, or a CD Burner, a 2nd Battery or a 2nd Hard drive as upgrades are needed.

Get the upgraded 15" Hi Res Screen and video card if you plan on playing DVD's...

Also nice is a Docking station so you can just click it in the dock and all your connections and peripherals are available.(Keyboard, mouse, cable modem, etc.

Most of the DVD capable laptops come with a S video connection right in the back of the case.
 
A friend of my wifes just gave her a toshiba satellite system. It's pretty damn awesome. She has some very unusual friends.
 
I'm partial to the IBM ThinkPads. You pay a little more for 'em, but they're damn near indestructible.

Feature-wise, I think you can get pretty much the same mix on any brand.

IBM still will through proprietary things in their equipment which pisses me off. Also with Dell you can buy a warranty that basically completely insures the laptop. We had some idiot forget to zip his bag and have his laptop ping pong down a flight of stairs. Dell replaced it.... no questions with this warranty.

Yeah, IBM does some goofy shit, no question. But it's a quality product, and stands up to the constant travel that our people put 'em through.

We eval'ed the Dell's about a year ago, and they just felt cheap to me. Plus I hated their trackpads. Minor bitches, I know, but minor bitches become major catastrophes to field personnel.

I didn't know Dell was doing the computer insurance thing now. I keep seeing ads for those policies all over the place, and I can't help but think they're kind of a ripoff.
 
Hmmm, well, I thinking now I might spend a little more to get some kickass features. I'd like a hi resolution monitor and a DVD player as well as a second external CD-RW drive to burn cds with.

If you can, get one with hot swappable internal drives. Externals have always been a royal pain in my ass.

Unless you're planning on copying CD to CD, in which case you can just ignore me.

I really wouldn't go all out on the laptop. They were made for portability. If you want all the bells and whistles put them in a desktop where they belong. My opinion, of course.
 
Are you looking for a desktop replacement? If not, why bother with the cd recorder and all that shit. Just put it on your desktop system.

Are you looking for something extremely light and portable? The new Toshiba Protege is super fucking light.

How about battery life? Longer battery requires a heavier laptop.

Do you want everything integrated or do you want plug in DVD/CD/Floppy which will cut down on transportation weight?

Do you want a big screen? Are you willing to go with a smaller screen to save on weight?

Are you planning on playing games? If so, you'll need something with a decent amount of video memory.

Are you storing a lot of big files like Mp3's? If not, why would you need a 10GB harddrive?

If your just doing word processing, why do you need a P3 750?

Lastly, if your still poor and sucking dick on the corner for spare change, why are you buying a laptop? Why not just make due with what you have or buy a used one?

If I get accepted into Officer Training School, I'll need it for that. Mostly word processing type stuff. The DVD player would nice to have to kill some time in my later tech school.
 
I've got a Dell Inspiron 4100 and I'm glad I got it, its pretty much a desktop replacement but its not too heavy.

Make sure you get everything that you will ever want in a laptop, because they can be a bitch to upgrade.
