Over the summer I started with deads doing reps of 10,8,6,5,3 since this was my first time to start doing them I gained a lot of strenght and my lats grew more than they ever have before. After deads I did 4 sets of wide grip pull ups/or lat pulldowns,then I usually did pullovers and a couple burnout sets of one-arm dumbell rows. I got incredibly strong and gained a lot of size just off these basic exercises. Keep it simple but it's good you want to do deads just make sure you get good form before you try to go real heavy because you don't want to hurt your back
