I may have found a great part time job

AAP

one of my doctors heard that they were looking for an extremely well built person to work as a personal trainer on the Carnival Cruise line ships. He showed them my pic from the company Memorial Day party the other month and gave them my number and told them to call me. They left a message for me this morning.

Only problem though is I have to get a PT certification. Either ACE or ESSA (sp?). I have no clue what either of them are.

And they are willing to work around my current schedule with my "real" job.

I am seriously thinking of doing this. Simply because the time I am not working with my hospitals, is so incredibly boring. I am going to call them again at 3PM and discuss it further.

I'll do it. And I don't have to wear pants either, provided that is one of their stipulations, and I'm of course assuming that it is.

How "part time" would a cruise ship be..

you'd be living in the crew quarters which is similar to living on a submarine.... and the ships leave for days on end.

.... wait, a bunch of guys crammed into a small space like a sardine might be right up your alley...

I looked into working cruise ships a few years back, and from what I remember you had to sign on for 6 mos. at a time. SO you would be living on the ship for 6 mos.

i was thinking of doing the exact same thing... cool thing is, the boat stays the same, but ever week you have a different group of hot ladies to poke :D

plus it'll take a little while to study for those really hard tests, which aren't free either.

Good luck AAP, cruise ship staff party like Gays in Montreal, too bad you like tits.

You will also likely sign a contract to not have any NON Business interactions with passengers..

Do you ever wonder why 90% of the crew of US based Cruise ships are foreign ?

Desperation

I used to work for Carnival Cruise Lines ---7 years ago---and I am quite familiar with the life on the ocean.

You will sign up for a 6-9 months contract and youi will get free room and board plus a salary. I have been all over the Caribbean and have seen so many exotic places that otherwise you would have to pay ...

Not to mention that you will fit quite well as there are quite a few people with gay tendencies working on the ship.

Try to find a 7 day cruise with an itinerary that includes at least 5 ports of call...

ACE certification costs $200 for the exam, but study materials cost extra. they recommend 3-6 months of study time for the exam. i think you can get the manual and a practice test for around $80.

the only pre-requisite you need is a certification in CPR. you can get your certification online through American Health & Safety www.healthsafety.com. it costs $80.

good luck - sounds like a great opportunity!

Ok... I had the phone call... very interesting. I will try to reply to each of the comments everyone made.

Ok... yes, in most cases you do have to sign a 6-12 month contract for the cruise ship. BUT!!...!!... there is a clause for exemption. This is what our doctors do. They are the onboard physicians, but they don't stay exclusively on that ship for those times. They rotate in shifts. This would also explain the "part-time" basis. They (and I) would not draw an hourly salary while on board. The salary would be $50 per day and $15 per client I spend an hour with. Of course, I don't think many people go on a cruise and hire a PT. I may be wrong, but on the cruises I do, I just drink and fuck a lot. I would get free meals and board. I would have my own single room on the ship (that was the FIRST thing I asked for.) It is not big, nor is it fancy with a balcony or such... as stated before, it may be like a submarine. But as long as I don't have to share, it is fine.

In addition to the personal training cert, I have to sign a no smoking policy and a statement that I will refrain from alcoholic beverages on board.

I am seriously thinking of doing this. I don't need the money, but I do need something to do. I had a meeting this past Monday in Orlando. I have no other appointments for the rest of this week or all next week. I feel like I am retired. It is a struggle to make the days while productive when you have so many days off.

This is one reason I have so much fun working out with my boy band... it breaks up to boredom. If my BF was free more, I would enjoy this time off. Or if I had any friends who were not stuck in the 9-5 grind, that would be good too.

At least I have you guys to entertain me.

yea man i hear ya on the boredom thing

the entire summer I've been working a 4 days on, 2 days off schedule which was tiring me out big time... so now I've got 4 days off, of which im on day 3 of, and am DYING... I've got a close circle of like 10 friends, 8 of which are out of town for the summer, and 2 of which work the worst hours ever.... so i sit here and feel as though I'm actually wasting my life hahah

then the girlfriend is pretty busy as well, or like you said, things would be fine.... i REALLY need a new hobby or something... im definitly open to suggestions!

I saw a program on the travel channel all about the staff working on cruise ships. it said on almost every single ship, no matter what company etc two people would share a cabin, except the captain and a few others. They showed the rooms and they are pretty spacious. you can fit two people pretty comfortably in them. but it's not what you think. you don’t go around getting lade and working all day with a constant buzz. They know everyone thinks it’s going to be one big party working on a cruise ship. They make sure you do you work and know were you are at all times. When you’re in your off hours you’re free to do as you please I believe, so I’m sure you can have a blast.

ACE is by far the easiest and least respected cert. 3-6 months of study should read "1-3 days." It's basically "how not to get sued."

Besides, you'll only be spending like 1-2 sessions with any given client anyway; they just want to feel worked. It won't matter whether or not your advice is effective (which I wouldn't trust ACE for).

If you're serious about PT-ing look into a better cert. But if you just wanna do this boat thing it'll suffice and not kill you on the study elements.

exactly the way I feel at times.... 28 and already see how retirement is going to be.

sad thing is when I graduated from college, I set my sights on retiring by age 40. Though age 33-34 is more likely now. If this is what retirement is like, I may just keep working out of boredom.

I wish I would have known you were in Orlando. I was there with my fiancee', sister, and her fiance. We all went to Island of Adventure for the day. You could have went. It was fun.

I work when I want to, so I understand the lonely thing. I used to think it would be great to have all this free time, but now it seems like it's curse. I live in this small town near Tampa, and it's hard meeting friends who don't work 9-5. I am actually considering taking another job, that isn't even that great, just to pass the time.

I'm sure you've already have done the usual movie alone in the afternoon, shopping and lunch in the afternoon, etc a million times, so I won't give that advice. How about entering a bodybuilding show? You have the genetics, and it would give you something to focus on and look forward to. Maybe try fitness modeling. At the very least, you would meet other people who don't work regular jobs, and maybe meet a new friend or two.

Ditto....if you can't study for and pass the A.C.E. test in under a week.....you might want to think about a part time job cleaning up monkey shit at the zoo....(not saying you won't pass :D ) as far as being the least respected.....right on the money too.....worthless IMO.....

Sounds like a good idea dude. I'd go for it if I were you. Heck you're still young, might as well make some money and have fun in the process.

I looked into a computer tech job aboard a cruice ship once, but the pay was too low. The trainer thing sounds cool. They have a ship right down the street in Long Biatch.

I understand why they would require AAP to get some sort of cert. But i am willing to bet that AAP knows allot more than what they can teach you in most PT certs.

I've only been on one cruise but I think you'll enjoy it. Different people all the time, new places, lots of sun and fun. I say try it out...if you don't you'll never know. If you wind up not liking it, then don't do it again. The gym on our ship was decent but be prepared for a lot of older people to be on board...it won't just be young folks like yourself. Maybe you'll get lucky and have some good clients to work with.

I was only there a few hours... flew up for a noon lunch with my hospital staff and then flew back... left at 9AM and was back home by 5PM. If I had someone to do the parks with, I would have gone.

Yeah... I just did a movie by myself again today (BB2)

AAP if you don't mind me asking, what is your current job?

I put specialty hospital teams under contract for my company.

AAP What the heck are you going to do when you retire in your mid 30s.. travel the world??

Well... when I was working the 9-5 grind... all I could think about was how nice it would be to have every day free. I could sleep late and then go to the beach, work out at off peak hours, etc.. etc... I set my sights on an age I could work up until I had accumlated enough to live off. When I got this job, I was making a LOT more than I originally projected so that cut some years off the time frame I needed in order to retire.

Though I see now what retirement would be like and I have pretty much changed my mind.

Incidentally, they do have a couple of positions open on the tech side in the internet cyber cafe on board the ship. The pay is $19 an hour. I am not sure if that is competive or what. Have no clue to the tech side of the economy and such.

How much money can you possibly be making to retire in you rmid 30s?

I am pushing for over 230K this year from salary + commissions.

The key is to make a modest amount, invest it in real estate and then let the rental from the real estate pay for the property and give you extra $$ every month.
